Stokes Company." Partial cloth, illustrated boards. Book is tight but lower third of three pages are separated at spine, some more pages with a tear. Some staining, worst of it at title spread (see photos). Some foxing, mostly to endpapers. This all sounds pretty bad, but most pages are quite clean and bright. I grade it only Fair. See photos. This lovely book takes "Little Black Sambo," keeps the story and corrects it. The little boy and his parents have authentic Indian names and are beautifully portrayed. One of my favorite illustrations shows Mamaji and Papaji looking *so* proud as their son has his photo taken in all his new finery. This copy, a first printing with the illustrations by Marcellino, is FINE in a FINE dust jacket. An as new copy, perfectly fresh, crisp, and bright. Not Signed.

NOTES: "The book's original illustrations were done by the author and simple in style, typical of most children's books, and depicted Sambo as a Southern Indian or Tamil child. The book has thematic similarities to Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, published in 1894, which had far more sophisticated illustrations. However, Little Black Sambo's success led to many counterfeit, inexpensive, widely available versions that incorporated popular stereotypes of "black" peoples." This book will be combined with a more modern example of the same publication (same colored illustrations by Bannerman & printed by Stokes in English, same format) A disbound but never-the-less complete example with all illustrations and text for reading in English. email for photos if this is a bit comfusing. Keith Ward's illustrations perpetuate the African perspective on Sambo, despite the fact that there are no tigers in Africa. Ward was a well-known impressionistic painter, and an illustrator, who gave us both the image of Elsie the Cow, and the bull, Elmer, on Elmer's Glue.
