Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book captures the trials and triumphs of Joseph, a young man whose life takes dramatic turns after he is sold into slavery by his brothers out of envy. It paints a vivid portrait of the ancient world, exploring themes of betrayal, forgiveness, and the power of dreams. The author d…elves into the complexities of love, loyalty, and family dynamics within the context of a patriarchal society. Through Joseph's journey, the book reflects on the human capacity for both good and evil, while showcasing the resilience of the human spirit even in the face of adversity. Ultimately, it sheds light on the enduring power of faith and the importance of reconciliation, making it an invaluable read for those interested in biblical narratives, historical fiction, and explorations of the human condition. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Contact seller4-star sellerHardcover. xxxiii, [1], 195 p.; 22 cm. Corr. reprint of 1935 edition, with supplementary bibliography. (Starr, Baptist bibliography R4745) From the Conclusion: `Our study has thus led us to reaffirm the view of what has been above called the critical orthodoxy of the beginning of the present century. I. The book of Daniel is not… a work of the sixth century B.C. .For a sixth-century person.could not have made so gross an error as our author madein introducing Darius the Mede between Belshazzar and Cyrus. Nor couldhe have supposed that a Median empire stood between the Babylonian and the Persian. II. As certainly can we say that the book of Daniel is a work of the second century B.C. III. The fact that a common error is spread throughout the whole book is an argument for its unity. IV. The religious value ofthe book is not weakened but strengthened. The author whose mind and outlook we have found in our study was not a man who transmitted a puzzle which it should baffle the ingenuity of saint and scholar to solve. He was a man who lived in critical days whena great battle of faith was in progress. He was a man who was bringing a divine word of cheer to men, and performing a living service, a man who rendered the richest service to succeeding generations through the service of his own. When, therefore, we read the book of Daniel no longer as a Chart of the Ages, but asthe work of a man who saw the world in the light of what he had seen of God, and whose interest was essentially and wholly religious, we are free to feel its religious power, and to understand its message. To the heroes of the Maccabean days it gave encouragement and hope. And beyond that it enshrined abiding principles which are as valid in our day as in those.' (p. 176-81) Near fine orig. maroon cloth, gilt, in price-clipped azure dj.

Two-page preface by the translator. ***Good in dark red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and ornate gilt floral decoration to spine. Floral d…ecorated front and rear free endpapers. Contemporaneous Jewish Religous Education Board Prize bookplate pasted to front paste-down. Edges of boards slightly rubbed. Very small 1cm split to outer cloth of head of spine. Head and tail of spine slightly rubbed. Corners of boards slightly bumped. Top corner-tips creased to a very few pages. No foxing. Pages clean. Spine tight. xi prelim-pages plus 359 pages. 188mm x 130mm. ***'The object of the following pages is to give to the student and general reader a fair idea of the contents of The Talmud. ***Some time since the translator was asked how it was that no English translation of the Talmud was in existence, and being convinced that may would be interested in its contents, he resolved upon the book which he now presents to the public. It is merely a collection of specimens, and makes no pretensions to any more advanced standing. The only object has bee to give in plain, easy language, a correct idea of the scope, and as general an idea as possible of the varied sections of the ancient and wonderful book. ***A portion of the introduction is taken from the preface to the Mishna of Maimonides; the chronology is from the "Seder Haddoroth" (Order of Historical Ages), and the sketches of the Rabbis from the Talmud are taken from various hints afforded by the book itself, joined with opinions of the translator. The sketches of Maimonides, Rashi, and Rabbi Amnon of Metz, are translated from the "Seder Haddoroth," while the incidents, parables, legends, lectures, and aphorisms, all directly from the Talmud, are placed in order thought suitable by the translator, and not as they regularly occur. The portion devoted to the Holy Days is from the work entitled "Menorath Hammdore" (The Lamp of the Light), the greater part of which is originally from the Talmud.' (Quote from the preface by the translator). ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
