Minor edge and corner wear, gently scuffed and scratched, corners are gently bumped and rubbed, lightly shelf worn, some underlining and margin writing in ink on a few of the pages and some green highlighting on a couple of the pages as well, overall a nice used copy!… Brown leatherette with gilt lettering on the front board and spine. 558 historical and informative pages! "This book is not a law bok, but a book about the law. It is written for the beginning student in law enforcement, criminology and corrections, sociology, social welfare, governemtn, and urban affairs who needs an understanding of the criminal law as a means of social control. Because it gives an over-view of the criminal justice process, the book is also valuable to law students who all too often complete their legal education without consideration of the criminal justice system as a system, though such consideration could well preface their in-depth study of the law." ---- from the Preface. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 8.5 X 11 inches. Gray wrappers, stapled. Vi, 73 pages illustrated with Tables. Reading creases alongside the spine and creases to the front cover.Tear at the foot of the spine. Clean interior, no writing or marks. This volume in the Criminal Justice Monograph series, is presented as the first st…udy of Black police officers in Texas. The 1969 study, The Negro Law Enforcement Officer in Texas, was influenced by the Civil Rights Movement and the racial discrimination present in Southern institutions, including police departments, during that period. It identified a pattern in the hiring of Black police officers correlated with a jurisdiction's environment and size, also noting several advantages to employing them. The study concluded that the employment of Black police officers provided practical advantages for community relations beyond symbolic representation. These advantages included providing "special competence" in dealing with minority groups and reducing stereotypes and prejudice among citizens.
