Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. Embark on a captivating journey into the heart of Kurdistan during the early 20th century with this firsthand account by a British political officer stationed in Mesopotamia following the First World War. The author's role as an administrator in the region offers a unique lens into the intricate tapestry of Kurdish culture, tribal dynamics, and the challenges of establishing order in a land steeped in tradition. The book delves into the geographical diversity of the region, painting vivid pictures of its landscapes, from arid deserts to towering mountains, and explores the customs, agricultural practices, and trade systems that shaped Kurdish society. Beyond mere observation, the author's experiences reveal the complexities of cross-cultural interactions, the delicate balance between local autonomy and centralized governance, and the aspirations of a people seeking stability and progress in the aftermath of the Ottoman Empire's decline. This book is an invaluable window into a pivotal period of Kurdish history, offering insights that continue to resonate in understanding the region's ongoing quest for self-determination and its place within the broader currents of global affairs. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (23 x 15 cm). pp.xiii+[i]+160. Publisher's original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, map endpapers. 16 full-page black & white plates. Old ownership inscription of David Seely to verso of front free endpaper. Generally very good condition. "Sir Rupert Hay has written a general and current description of these States. From Kuwait, to which Kaiser Wilhelm II's ambitions extended and which now is the fourth oil-producing state of the world, down the Western Coast of the Gulf - through Bahrain, Qatar and the Trucial States to Muscat and Oman each of these small countries is treated geographically, politically and socially. Their special relations to Britain and the unusual institution of the "Residency" are set forth in detail from, naturally, the point of view of one who was himself the Resident. The oil industry of the Gulf is described in a separate chapter. These pages underline how oil has brought change to the financial position and the social structure of the States where it has been found. Sixteen photographs of persons and places little known to the Western world accompany the text" (dust-jacket). Includes chapters on Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, the Trucial Shaikdoms, and Muscat.
