First edition. 16mo. 224pp. Binding heavily toned at the spine and edges with shallow loss at the crown and a nick on the bottom of the front cover, most of the bottom page edges and about half of the foredge of the text darkened from a dampstain that affects the interior margins just a bit, sound but good only. Aside from the light and shallow marginal staining, the text has been nicely preserved. Wonderfully Inscribed several times by Harte; on the flyleaf the Inscriptions are dedicated to an Indiana native, future editor and literary adviser for Bobbs-Merrill and editor of *The Century Magazine*: "This little Book is the Property of Hewitt Hanson Howland, by Purchase from the Author, who [?] gets one Greenback in a partial Reimbursement of a total loss, in a ridiculous investment. Walter Blackburn Harte. May, 1897." Harte has also laid down advertisements for his book on both pastedowns and Inscribed them. On the front pastedown, he has canceled "The Arena Publishing Company" and written "Dissolved. After robbing about 2000 Simple[?] Authors, + fraudulently selling shares not worth the Paper, they were forced into Bankruptcy. So I have to run Bookseller of the Remnant." On the title page he begins another long Inscription about the publisher with "Exit a Gang of Robbers!" Harte has also used most of the blank page facing the Table of Contents to write a quote from a piece of his. Harte was an interesting and promising writer who died in 1899 at the age of 32 his autograph is scarce. Harte was somewhat recently the subject of a scholarly book about the intersecting American and Canadian literary milieu at the *fin de siècle*. A humorous, very nice association copy.

From the Bart Auerbach Collection. 8vo. Original light green cloth, stamped in gilt. First edition. A marvelous association copy of Harte's only book, inscribed by him on the front free endpaper to the Boston publisher Richard Gorham Badger. The inscription, dated March 31, 1897, totals about 85 words and fills nearly the full page. In addition, filling the half-title, Harte has written a nearly 200-word "Note to the Casual Reader of 1997," a time when he assumes the reader will be more receptive to his essays (instead of forgetting him completely, which seems to be the case). Further, Harte has revised the imprint on the title-page, has written a quote from 'Hamlet' on the following leaf recto, and has added a 60-word note at the end of the preface. The British expatriate Harte was born in 1868, met Walter Pater (who became a mentor) in 1884, and came to America in 1890; he died in 1899. He was very much a part of the American Nineties (Beer's "Marvel Decade"), establishing 'The Fly Leaf' (which ran for five issues 1895-1896), editing 'The Lotus' for a year (1896-1897), and contributing to other little magazines.
