Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. As far as I can tell, this is a very rare book. I only found one copy online and that one had some condition issues. Please find a lovely copy of: "Pro Football- Its "Ups" and "Downs" by Harry A. March. The book is bound in pebbled red boards with elaborate gilt decorations and titles on the cover. The book offers many chapters with vignettes of the early days of professional football and its players and coaches, along with vintage b&w photos. This is the second edition, dated 1939 which is part of the title on the cover. The book is inscribed on the inside of the front cover by Paul Steinberg and is featured in Chapter XXII (page 136). There is a great deal of information about the early days of Pro Football throughout the book. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are clean, perhaps a bit dust-dulled but still quite handsome and with only slight bumping to the corners and spine tips. Inside, as mentioned, there is a lengthy inscription signed by Paul Steinberg on the inside of the front endpaper. This, and the bookplate of its former owner, are the only marks I found in the book. The interior pages are of glossy paper stock and are clean and bright throughout, without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight, sound and square. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Several (illustrator).…

Born in 1902 on London's West End and by the age of 7 he was studying at the Trinity College of Music. By the time Mayerl was 20 he was resident pianist for a Southampton Hotel. It was there that British bandleader and saxophonist Bert Ralton first heard him, and instantly sought to hire him for his Havana Band at London's Savoy Hotel. From 1923 to 1926 Mayerl was a featured soloist with the band in the earliest years of the BBC. In 1926 Mayerl left the Havana band to pursue a solo career in recording and composition. While maintaining a schedule with the BBC, he also toured the UK performing in venues of all sizes, taking time off to create increasingly complex syncopation's for publication. More importantly, he started publishing not just his own works, but some transcriptions of other composer's pieces he had recorded. In the 1930s, Mayerl established a correspondence course 'The Billy Mayerl Club Magazine' for instruction in piano and composition. He spent the war primarily in London, although publishing very little during this time. Once peace had been re-established, Billy renewed his ties with radio. He also took his music to USA and Australasia. A heavy smoker, Billy finally died from a heart attack in 1959 at the tender age of 57. His post-war pieces have a mellow and classical line with a more melancholic composition, along with his unique sound of tenth's and fourth's, albeit wound around with more sophistication, one cannot help wondering what he would have written had he lived into the 1970s. Neat internal tape repaired tear to the spine and in Very Good clean condition. We currently hold in stock 65 other titles by Billy Mayerl. Member of the P.B.F.A. MAYERL, Billy (1902-1959).…
