Illustrated with innumerable black and white engravings, photographs and drawings and including the famous detachable plate of the linghi - (Chinese torture of slow cutting), which the author recommends that sensitive souls could remove if it offended their Western principles! viii + 308pp. Early twentieth century half calf, rubbed and corners bumped, boards in pebbled cloth. Leather title label lettered in gilt, endpapers browned, inner hinges split but holding firm, a tight and clean copy. 21 x 14cm.
