Hardback. Condition: Good. First Edition. xiv, 272 pages plus 6 page alphabetical index at the rear. Contemporary full calf binding worn at the spine with cracked hinges. Binding holding. Small amount of contemporary marginalia from a previous owner . Scarce. A first attempt to organise the law as used in the courts. Pleas of the Crown were capital offences committed "against the peace of our Lord the King, his Crown and dignity"; as such, the book dealt with capital crimes and the associated procedure.

(Winfield) The Historiae was the first attempt at a history of the English criminal law, and is considered Hale's most important work from the point of view of legal doctrine. The first volume begins with matters of excuse, like infancy and madness, and proceeds to more important crimes and statutory felonies, while the second deals with criminal procedure in capital cases.
