Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Thomas Mitchell Page, Thomas Mitchell, R. Marvin Wilcox, Charles Sarka, C. M. Relyea, Max F. Klepper (illustrator). This is a nicely preserved issue of the June 1903 "Cosmopolitan Illustrated Monthly Magazine" . There is a lot to digest in this old periodical. There is an article on gateways for residential structures, most of which seem to be fairly ostentatious and posh. As to women's fashions, "Floral Head-dresses", is illustrated with photographs of young women wearing floral things on their heads. On a more serious front, Edward Everett Hale discusses Old-Age Pensions. There is a fine article on George Cadbury's creation of Bourneville, an utopian English town. "Mankind in the Making", a serialized work by H. G. Wells, is continued. There is plenty of fiction, a smattering of poetry, and a great deal of period advertising, covering just about anything you could imagine, including automobiles, cameras, typewriters, fashion, foods, medical curiosities, and more. TABLE OF CONTENTS : - The Rose of Yesterday and Today - by Katherine V. C. Matthews - Gateways : Artistic and Characteristic - by Phebe Westcott Humphreys - Floral Head-dresses - by Mrs. Wilson Woodrow - A Wary Campaigner - Story by Francis Willing Wharton - Making a Choice of a Profession : Journalism - by Albert Shaw - The Luck of the Three Sevens ? Story by R. H. Farnham - Old-Age Pensions ? by Edward Everett Hale. (Hale, Unitarian minister, author, & social worker. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a comprehensive guide to management strategies used in southwest Illinois. Conducted over the course of more than five years, the author analyzes farming practices common in the area, and presents his findings on how to maximize earnings. From explaining how variations in crop yields can influence the profitability of a harvest, the author follows this up with an examination of how these yields can be improved through soil maintenance and specific crop rotation practices. Additionally, the author discusses which livestock are the most profitable for farmers, and how selecting high-quality livestock can directly improve a farmer's profit margin. These concepts are supported by real-world examples, including case studies from local farms. This book is a valuable resource for anyone looking to improve their farming practices and increase their earnings. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book records the economic impact of introducing mechanized farming techniques in Illinois agricultural practices between 1913 and 1937. The author details the cost-cutting impact of tractors, combines, and large scale machinery on the cost of major Illinois crops such as corn, wheat, and soybeans. Labor costs plummeted, especially during harvest seasons. The increased use of gasoline and repairs raised farmers' direct cash expenses, but the cost-savings from reduced labor more than made up for it. Besides lowering production costs, this mechanization also significantly altered the nature of agricultural labor, reducing the need for seasonal labor and increasing the need for skilled mechanics. The book also explores the impact of economic factors such as commodity prices and tax policy on the agriculture industry. A valuable account of the transition to mechanized farming, this book illuminates a critical turning point in U.S. agricultural history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
