Jackets sunned along the spines and extremities, and slightly edgeworn, particularly v.5, with some general minor chips and tears; otherwise a sound and serviceable, very good set in a worn publisher's box, which is splitting along the joints and reinforced along the rear seams with tape.

The books are all bound in fine dark green cloth with titles stamped in gilt on the spines and lyre design stamped in gilt on the front covers. Light foxing on all edges. In Vol.1 there is creasing on pages 725-732 at the top corners and also in the supplement p v (Preface) to p.8 at the bottom corners. Light foxing on the margins of pages adjacent to the illustrations, and the text and illustrations are generally clean and unmarked. The dust jackets are in very good condition with small closed tears on some edges. In Volume I a piece of paper is missing on the bottom edge of the back panel near the corner. The original price for the set-"$25.00" is on the front flaps. Too large to ship internationally. The editor was an English music critic and for many years chief music critic for the Times of London. Limit of period covered was A.D. 1450.Profusely illustrated with portraits of composers, music and musical instruments in black and white.
