Authorized American edition of this early large format Père Castor book, featuring striking and stylized Art Deco color lithographs by Russian émigré artist Guertik with dotted lines for children to finish the designs. It was émigré artists like Guertik, Nathalie Parain, Alexandra Exter, Feodor Rojankowsky, and Georges Cherkessof, working with avant-garde Constructivist, Dadaist, and Minimalist art philosophies, that gave the Père Castor books their greatest distinction and gained them long-lasting fame. This book first published by Flammarion in 1934. A nice intact copy. 10.5'' x 9.5''. Original side-stapled color pictorial flexible card wrappers. Illustrated by Guertik in color throughout, with "finishing" images intact and unused. [20] pages. Slight edge wear and soiling to wrappers, top front corner bumped.

Very good. The wraps and pages are moderately age-toned. This copy once belonged to the Girard Foundation Library, and has a bookplate on the verso of the first page (obscuring a little bit of the uncolored illustration). With charming illustrations by Russian artist, Hélène Guertik. After fleeing the Bolshevik Revolution, Guertik began her career in France by painting scarves for Chanel, and went on to illustrate eleven works for Le Père Castor.
Condition: Very good. Scarce and beautiful activity book from Père Castor, featuring striking color lithographs, each facing an image in outline to be colored by the owner.
