Hardcover. Condition: vg. First edition. Folio. 157, [1]pp. Original illustrated dust-jacket over tan cloth with gold lettering on front cover and spine. Book housed in original slipcase. Illustrated title-page protected with a tissue-guard. Fascinating work closely tracing the development of Shunga, a branch of pictorial art that glorifies the erotic. Shunga meaning "Spring Pictures" or "Sex Pictures". It captured the spirit of the sex act that in Japanese eyes was simply the joyful union of the sexes, a natural function that represented man's greatest pleasure - almost his raison d'etre! In this book, Grosbois, one-time director of the French-Japanese Institute at Kyoto, has done a remarkable job of placing the Shunga, the erotic prints, within the context of a culture that that's distinctly non-Western. He makes frequent reference to literary works, including some by Saikaku, that the eager amateur student may have missed. He notes the wars, Western contacts, and other social upheavals that elicited and shaped these wonderful portrayals of sexuality. And, above all, he presents over 150 works of classic erotic art, ranging from the mythical (p.114) and literary, to the familiar (as in the cleanup tissues of p.135), exaggerated (p.61-63), multiple (p.111), or hilarious (p. 130). This work is profusely illustrated with numerous tipped-in color plates and b/w plates. 6 of the color plates are small fold-outs. Minor age-wear on dust-jacket with minor soiling on spine and slight age-toning on back cover. Minor age-toning along paper margin. Dust-jacket in overall good+, binding and interior in very good condition.
