Handsomely illustrated with 25 etchings and aquatint engravings by Greco, supplied in duplicate with the 2nd hand colored and all tissue guarded. Front and rear endpages foxed; title page of Vol I cracking in the gutter and nearly loose. Here and there a mild gap between signatures and several plates coming loose from the binding. Prior ownership small name and address label to front pastedown and a small ink name stamp in the gutter of the contents page. A good set for rebinding or rebacking. . In this set Gronow reflects on the society of London, the political landscape of Paris and the courts of Napoleon. Though the reliability of this account can be brought into question, it makes for an entertaining read. Written by Rees Howell Gronow, known as Captain Gronow. Well known for his autobiographical writing, Illustrated throughout. Collated complete. One set of plates to volume II is misbound, but is present. A interesting personal account, giving an insight into the British and French society of the 19th, albeit from the bias of the renowned dandy. In a full cloth binding, with rough cut pages. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and also to the extremities. Rubbing to the spine, joints and extremities. Light creases to the spine. The odd scratch mark to the front and rear boards. Bookplates to the front and rear pastedowns. Spotting to the front and rear pastedowns and endpapers. Light age toning to the fore edge. Internally, generally firmly bound, with several pages and plates loosening slightly. Page are generally clean. Offsetting caused by the illustrated plates, mainly affecting the tissue guards. Instances of foxing and spotting throughout each volume. Tape repair to the reverse of several plate, securing the binding, becoming lightly age toned. Good. book.
