Surtees Society's edition combines in a single volume Gronow's Anecdotes of the Camp, the Court and the Clubs at the Close of the Last War with France and Recollections and Anecdotes. Based on the limited edition of 1889 and with 17 full-page colour plates, with thirteen colour plate illustrations from designs by Joseph Grego.The second volume combines Celebrities of London and Paris and Last Recollections with twelve colour plates.Collated, complete. Rees Howell Gronow (1794-1865) was a military man before commencing an unsuccessful parliamentary career. He wrote four works of reminiscences, this being the first; it is an entertaining work and details society in London and Paris in his time. Gronow was extremely popular and immaculately dressed, and early in life completed in many duels.With a frontispiece portrait of the subject and thirty-two illustrations by Joseph Grego. Collated, complete.With a gild emblem to the front cover of each volume. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally very smart, minor bumping to the extremities. Though the reliability of this account can be brought into question, it makes for an entertaining read. Written by Rees Howell Gronow, known as Captain Gronow. Well known for his autobiographical writing, Illustrated throughout. Collated complete. One set of plates to volume II is misbound, but is present. A interesting personal account, giving an insight into the British and French society of the 19th, albeit from the bias of the renowned dandy. In a full cloth binding, with rough cut pages. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and also to the extremities. Rubbing to the spine, joints and extremities. Light creases to the spine. The odd scratch mark to the front and rear boards. Bookplates to the front and rear pastedowns. Spotting to the front and rear pastedowns and endpapers. Light age toning to the fore edge. Internally, generally firmly bound, with several pages and plates loosening slightly. Page are generally clean. Offsetting caused by the illustrated plates, mainly affecting the tissue guards.
