A little wear to extremities, and scattered foxing, including flyleaves and preliminaries. 1830 Edinburgh Academy prize label inscribed to John Murray on front pastedown. Illustrated by engraved portrait frontispiece. Decorated by device on title page. A greater part of the volume contains the life and letters of the poet and classical scholar, Thomas Gray, the author of Elegy Written in a Country Church-yard. The poems are followed by Imitations and Variations, Additional poems (not included in Mason's first edition,The Poems of Mr.Gray, 1775) and Poems in Memory of Mr.Gray. Edited by William Mason (1725-97), poet and cleric, who was the friend and executor of Thomas Gray, before embarking on this much admired literary biography. Edinburgh Academy was founded in 1824.
