Seller: Brothertown Books, Deansboro, NY, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Book Club Edition. Here is the 1991 Book of the Month Club edition of "Wife to Mr. Milton" by Robert Graves. It is a handsome, solid hardcover, bound in black, paper-covered boards, with a cloth-covered spine. The hardcover is now out of print, and the BOMC no longer lists it for their readers. Robert Graves knocked it out of the ballpark with this deeply researched novel, which is a fictionalized account of the tragic marriage of Mary Powell (age 16) to John Milton (age 33). Milton at that time was England's greatest poet. Mary was a royalist, and Milton was a Parliamentarian; but the tragedy lay much deeper than political differences. Young Mary was a sensitive soul seeking independence and love. The austere Milton was, to put it simply, tyrannical. Taking place during the darkly volatile and violent years of the English Civil War, this story will keep you reading to the bitter last page. The book itself, ends with an epilogue, Appendix, and Glossary, which present an explanation of the complexities of the time, its war, and the many personages who were deeply involved - John Milton being one of them.
