Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. First published in 1965, transferred to digital printing 2008. 2 volume set PP l, 264; v, 719. "The editors extract from the Palatine Anthology such epigrams as can be assumed to have been written between the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC and the compilation by Meleager of Gadara, about 100 BC, of the anthology which he called The Garland. The first volume arranges the epigrams by their authors, adds from other sources further epigrams by these authors and prints with a full critical apparatus about 850 epigrams in all. The second volume contains a commentary on the text and Greek and English indexes. The assignment of many of the epigrams to the Hellenistic period depends on the assumption that they were included in Meleager's Garland, and the introduction therefore discusses the date, arrangement, and contents of that anthology. It also discusses the reliability of the ascriptions attached to the epigrams and the authorities for the text." The books are in excellent condition with no inscriptions. PLEASE NOTE: Heavyish set so a little extra may be needed for shipping to non-UK customers.

Add to basketCambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1965. 2 vols. L,264;719p. Original blue cloth. Spine gilt titled. Head and tail spine slightly bumped. Cover slightly scratched and with some vague stains. Small personal library mark and name on free endpaper. Some upper corners pages deliberately creased. Some scholarly annotations by KJD, mostly in red pen. Vol.2: small hole in back cover. Still a nice copy. 'The work is devoted to almost 5,000 lines of Hellenistic poetry which had remained so far (.) devoid of any adequate commentary. Not only Alexandrinists but all students of Greek literature are heavily indebted to the editors, who have produced an outstanding piece of scholarship. Professor Page has concentrated his attention on Meleager, whose poems are analysed, with penetrating acumen, in their literary background and the allusiveness of their diction (.). Mr. Gow has dealt with the rest of the epigrammatists, a task of immense labour. He has elegantly solved, or soberly reassessed, numberless problems relating to text, 'Realien', and diction. (.). The two editors must be warmly congratulated on the publication of this work, which is not only monumental in size but also Bentleina in quality.' (GIUSEPPE GIANGRANDE in The Classical Review (New Series), 1967, p.17-24). From the library of the late Sir Kenneth James Dover.
