Govard Bidloo (author) (illustrator). "Antique print, titled: ''T.97.'' - Tab.97: This plate presents the skeletal structure of the hand and fingers, dividing them into the carpus (wrist), metacarpus (palm), and phalanges (fingers). The carpus (I. Figure) is composed of eight bones, each uniquely shaped and tightly connected via cartilage, ligaments, and capsular membranes. The first three bones (1, 2, 3) articulate with the bones of the forearm (radius and ulna). The fourth (4) is the smallest and most laterally positioned. The remaining four (58) form a row aligned with the metacarpal bones. These carpal bones are externally convex and internally concave to accommodate tendon passage and articulation. The metacarpals (AD) are long, slender bones with slight concavity along the shaft and round protrusions for joint articulation at their heads. The phalanges (F, G, H), fifteen in total, include three per finger, except the thumb, which has only two. Each phalanx is rounded externally and slightly hollow internally, with proximal heads having depressions for joint formation and distal heads featuring two articular prominences. These joints are capped with cartilage. The outer view of the complete hand skeleton is shown in the II. Figure, corresponding to the above markings. At the joints, especially near the thumb and fingers, small bones known as sesamoid bones (911) are embedded in tendons. These are typically round, cartilage-covered, and variable in number, with about twelve per hand, though often too small to be observed. The bones of the carpus are separately displayed in the III. Figure (1219), clearly illustrating their form and position. A later Dutch version of Govard Bidloo's most famous work, his monumental Anatomia humani corporis published in Amsterdam in 1685, containing 107 copperplate engravings. Like so many large and expensive anatomical atlases of the time, the work was not a financial success, and in 1690 he published a Dutch translation entitled, Ontleding des menschelyken lichaams, using the same plates. When this edition did not sell well either, Bidloo's publisher sold 300 of the extra printed plates to William Cowper, a noted English anatomist. Cowper published the plates with his own, English language text in Oxford in 1698 under the title, Anatomy of the humane bodies, without mentioning Bidloo or the artists of the original plates. Cowper went so far as to use Bidloo's engraved allegorical title page, amended with an irregular piece of paper lettered: "The anatomy of the humane bodies .," which fits over the Dutch title (see a comparison here). A number of vitriolic exchanges took place between Bidloo and Cowper, including several pamphlets published in each anatomist's defense. Cowper claimed, without much evidence presented, that the plates were not Bidloo's at all, but that they were commissioned by Jan Swammerdam (16371680) and that after his death Swammerdam's widow had sold them to Bidloo. The illustrations in Bidloos' work were drawn by Gerard de Lairesse (16401711) and engraved by Abraham Blooteling (16401690) and Peter van Gunst (1659?1724?).Reference: Choulant, L. Govard Bidloo (author) (illustrator). Antique print, titled: ''T.12.'' - Tab.12: Anatomical study of the external ear and associated facial musculature, presenting multiple figures including dissections of the auricle, parotid gland, salivary ducts, and facial muscles in both superficial and deeper layers. The main illustrations depict the ear's cartilaginous frameworksuch as the helix, antihelix, and conchaalong with five main auricular muscles. Other images detail the parotid salivary gland and its extensive network of ducts and branches, with tubes and dissections showing connections between oral and facial gland systems. The plate also demonstrates muscles responsible for jaw movement, facial expression, and lip manipulation, with commentary on the interaction of soft tissues, bones, and tendons, particularly around the cheek, chin, and mandibular hinge. Also included are detailed insertions of the temporalis muscle and masseter, as well as early insights into the functional anatomy of the nasal muscles and their cartilaginous foundation. This composition is a comprehensive overview of craniofacial anatomy, with a focus on salivary and auditory systems. Govard Bidloo (author) (illustrator). "2 Antique prints, titled: ''T.10.'' - Tab.10: An exceptionally detailed anatomical engravings showing the entire human central nervous system, from the cerebrum down to the cauda equina of the spinal cord. The image presents a dorsal view of the brain and spinal cord, with the brain partially dissected to expose both grey matter (bast) and white matter (merg). The spinal cord is flanked by pairs of spinal nerves, radiating symmetrically from the cord through intervertebral foramina. Additional insets include microscopic views of nerve fiber bundles, vascular plexuses, glandular structures, and transverse sections of the spinal cord. Anatomical highlights include the pineal gland, optic chiasm, cerebellar arbor vitae, ventricular cavities, and the filum terminale at the base of the spine. Several figures illustrate the vascular and membranous composition of the meninges and perivascular nerves in detail, emphasizing the structural complexity of the neurovascular system. This plate synthesizes both macro- and micro-anatomical insights, likely intended for advanced anatomical instruction. Govard Bidloo (author) (illustrator). Antique print, titled: ''T.104.'' - Tab. 104: Anatomical study of the tibia (shinbone) and fibula (calf bone), the two primary bones of the lower leg.The tibia, shown in Figures 1 and 2, is robust and triangular in cross-section, with a broad upper end (B) that articulates with the femur, forming the knee joint. The anterior border is sharp and prominent, known as the shin ridge, and the medial malleolus (C) forms the inner ankle. The fibula, seen in Figures 3 and 4, is slender and lies laterally to the tibia. It does not participate in the knee joint but helps form the lateral malleolus (F) at the ankle. Both bones are shown with detailed surface textures, muscle attachment points, and interosseous borders that accommodate connective tissue between the bones. This illustration emphasizes structural differences and articulation points, important for understanding leg mechanics and movement. Govard Bidloo (author) (illustrator). Antique print, titled: ''T.98.'' - Tab. 98: Anatomical plate depicting the sacrum and coccyx (sacral and tail bones) from both external and internal views.Figure 1: External surface of the sacrum, a roughly triangular bone composed of fused vertebrae, situated at the base of the spine. Visible are the transverse ridges (A), remnants of the intervertebral discs, and the anterior sacral foramina (B), which allow for the passage of sacral nerves. The superior articular processes (D) and various roughened ridges and protrusions also illustrate points of muscle and ligament attachment.Figure 2: Internal view of the sacrum showing its smooth anterior surface (A) and the sacral canal (center opening), through which the spinal cord descends. The remains of vertebral fusion (C) and multiple foramina (B) are visible.Figure 3: The coccyx or tailbone, made up of four or five small vertebrae. It is seen from the dorsal side, with rudimentary articular processes (A & B) at the top and small perforations and surface irregularities along its length.Figure 4: The internal view of the coccyx, complementing the previous image.Original legend sheet available on request (if available due to legends of 2 plates being on 1 sheet).Made by Gerard de Lairesse after Govard Bidloo (author).Medium: Copperplate engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.Sheet size: 34.5 x 51 cm (13.58 x 20.08 inch). Antique print, titled: ''T.75.'' - Tab. 75: A detailed anatomical engraving of the anterior thigh musculature, focusing on the muscles responsible for movement of the tibia (shin). Central to the image is A. the sartorius muscle, which crosses diagonally from the anterior superior iliac spine to the medial tibial surface below the knee. Above it, remnants of the fascia lata are shown (B), reflecting its broad, sheath-like form. Deep to the sartorius lies D. the gracilis, originating near the pubic bone (E) and inserting with a slender tendon (F) also at the tibia. Prominently featured is G. the rectus femoris, part of the quadriceps group, which stretches from the pelvis to the tibial tuberosity, enveloping the patella along with its companions: H. the vastus medialis and I. the vastus lateralis, anchoring to the medial and lateral parts of the femur, respectively. The plate reveals the layered interaction of these extensors of the knee and flexors of the hip, pivotal to upright posture and locomotion. Govard Bidloo (author) (illustrator). Antique print, titled: ''T.77.'' - Tab. 77: An anatomical illustration of the posterior thigh, focusing on the hamstring group and adjacent musculature. Dominating the composition is A. the biceps femoris, notable for its dual heads attaching at the ischial tuberosity and femur, and inserting on the fibula. This muscle's large, distinct fascicles are depicted with striking clarity. To its medial side lies D. the semimembranosus, characterized by its broad, flattened tendon that gives it a membranous appearance. Just superficial to it is E. the semitendinosus, narrower and more cord-like, extending along the inner thigh to insert on the tibia. The C. fibular head and B. posterior femoral surface provide skeletal landmarks for muscular attachment. This image powerfully conveys the organization and density of the hamstring complex, essential in leg flexion and hip extension. Original legend sheet available on request (if available due to legends of 2 plates being on 1 sheet).Made by Gerard de Lairesse after Govard Bidloo (author).Medium: Copperplate engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.Sheet size: 34.5 x 51 cm (13.58 x 20.08 inch). Antique print, titled: ''T.94.'' - Tab. 94: Anatomical study of the human ribs, shown in various orientations to illustrate structural differences between true ribs and false ribs.Figures 1 and 2 depict the first rib, broader and more flattened than the others, with a tubercle (C) for articulation with the transverse process of the thoracic vertebra, and a groove (E) for the subclavian vessels, especially visible in Fig. 3.Figures 36 display mid-thoracic ribs (true ribs), curved and elongated, showing the vertebral end (B) and the sternal end (A), with typical shaft curvature and surface markings.Figures 7 and 8 illustrate floating (false) ribs, notably shorter, lacking anterior connection to the sternum, and typically terminating in musculature (e.g. the diaphragm or abdominal wall). These are more irregular in form, with less defined curvature and smaller dimensions. All ribs demonstrate the classical features: a head, neck, tubercle, and shaft, with a costal groove along the inferior border for intercostal nerves and vessels. Govard Bidloo (author) (illustrator). Antique print, titled: ''T.99.'' - Tab. 99: Anatomical rendering of the hip bone (os coxae), also referred to historically as the "nameless bone" due to its composite structure.Figure 1: Shows the ilium (A) the large, flared upper portion of the hip bone, featuring a prominent iliac spine (B) and the internal concave surface (C). The auricular surface (D) is visible, where the ilium articulates with the sacrum via strong ligaments. The pubis (E) is the anterior segment, joined at the pubic symphysis, and features the obturator foramen (F) a large, oval opening that allows for the passage of nerves and vessels. The ischium (H) forms the lower, posterior part of the hip bone.Figure 2: Highlights the acetabulum (A) the deep socket into which the head of the femur fits to form the hip joint. Also noted is the acetabular notch and ligament attachment (B). Further details include iliac fossa (C), bony ridges and projections (D), and multiple surface irregularities (E) indicative of muscle and ligament attachments.Original legend sheet available on request (if available due to legends of 2 plates being on 1 sheet).Made by Gerard de Lairesse after Govard Bidloo (author).Medium: Copperplate engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.Sheet size: 34.5 x 51 cm (13.58 x 20.08 inch). Govard Bidloo (author) (illustrator). Antique print, titled: ''T.85.'' - Tab.85: This anatomical illustration focuses on the posterior muscles of the lower leg and foot, showing the deep flexors and their tendinous insertions. A. The knee joint, with B. the tibia (shin bone) and C. the fibula labeled. D. The calf muscle (gastrocnemius) is shown with its two heads converging into E. a central tendon. F. The plantar muscle (plantaris) is visible, its long, slender tendon running beside the Achilles. G. The posterior tibialis muscle, located deep between tibia and fibula, is fan-shaped and inserts medially behind the medial malleolus, attaching near the navicular bone. H. The flexor digitorum longus (the "perforating muscle"), originates on the tibia (and partially fibula), splits into four tendons that pass through the tendons of I. the flexor digitorum brevis (the "perforated muscle"), and insert on the distal phalanges of the lateral four toes. It mimics its counterpart in the hand. Finally, K. the flexor hallucis longus (flexor of the big toe) arises from the posterior fibula and inserts on the distal phalanx of the big toe, sometimes extending to the second toe. This plate emphasizes the deep posterior leg compartment, especially key for understanding toe flexion, push-off in gait, and tarsal tunnel anatomy. Govard Bidloo (author) (illustrator). Antique print, titled: ''T.76.'' - Tab. 76: Anatomical engraving of the anterior and medial thigh, displaying a more superficial view of the major muscular structures involved in hip flexion and knee extension. Dominating the plate is C. the rectus femoris, flanked by its powerful counterparts G. the vastus medialis and H. the vastus lateralis, components of the quadriceps femoris group. Medially, we see I. the adductor longus, part of the inner thigh muscle group. A. and B. likely represent fascial layers being retracted, while K. the iliopsoas, the primary hip flexor, is visible inserting near the upper thigh. D. the sartorius and E. the gracilis can also be discerned, tracing their distinctive oblique courses toward the knee. This plate clearly showcases the interconnected peesachtige uitspanzelen (tendinous expansions) uniting into a common tendon enveloping the patella, pivotal for coordinated leg movement. Antique print, titled: ''T.82.'' - Tab.82: TThis anatomical plate illustrates the muscles and tendons of the anterior lower leg and dorsal foot, focusing on the extensors and their insertions. A. The anterior tibial muscle originates partly from the upper tibia and fibula and is connected to the outer surface of the shin. It runs under the retinaculum (cut here) and inserts primarily on the medial cuneiform and first metatarsal, though sometimes also on the navicular. Near the foot, the tendon becomes cartilaginous and overlays a small sesamoid bone. B. The fibularis (peroneus) muscles have three portions: one inserts on the fifth metatarsal (supporting the pinky toe), another joins at the lateral ankle and inserts near the cuboid and lateral cuneiform, and the final joins the others but varies in height. D. The long extensor of the toes attaches at the upper tibia and fibula, then splits into four or more tendons passing under the retinaculum to the phalanges of the toes E. F. The short extensor of the toes, lying atop the foot, arises near the ankle and sends tendons (including a distinct one for the big toe) to the first and second joints of the toes. G. The extensor of the big toe, originating from the tibia, runs along the toe and inserts dorsally. The skeletal structures of the shin (I), calf (K), and foot (L) are shown exposed. This is a clear study of the extensor mechanism of the foot, important for understanding gait, dorsiflexion, and anatomical layering. Govard Bidloo (author) (illustrator). Antique print, titled: ''T.84.'' - Tab. 84: : Anatomical dissection of the lower leg and calf musculature, with emphasis on the posterior compartment. The illustration presents the powerful gastrocnemius muscle (E), dissected to show its large fleshy bellies attaching superiorly to the femoral condyles and merging into the robust Achilles tendon, inserting onto the calcaneus. Beneath this, the soleus (F), a broad and flat muscle, is shown arising from the posterior tibia and fibula, forming much of the muscular mass of the calf. Medially, the plantaris muscle (G) is displayed, a slender structure with a long tendon that runs between the gastrocnemius and soleus to attach near the heel, contributing to the plantar flexion mechanism. Also visible are the flexor hallucis longus (H), flexor digitorum longus (K), and the tibialis posterior (I), each traced through their course down the leg, emphasizing their function in toe flexion and foot support. The knee joint anatomy (A, B, C) and the full tibial shaft (D) frame the composition. Govard Bidloo (author) (illustrator). Antique print, titled: ''T.91.'' - Tab. 91: Anatomical study of the cranial sutures and internal skullcap anatomy.Figure 1 displays the external view of the calvarium, or skullcap, sawn horizontally across the base. Clearly visible are the coronal suture (E) joining the frontal bone (B) to the parietal bones (C), the sagittal suture (F) running along the midline between the parietals, and the lambdoid suture (G) connecting them to the occipital bone (D). Notably, a small Wormian bone (an irregular, extra bone) is visible within the suture. The image emphasizes the irregularity and variability of cranial suture formation.Figure 2 presents the interior of the skullcap (A), exposing the endocranial surface with distinct vascular grooves (F) from the meningeal arteries, along with the smoothed impressions of brain gyri. The junctions between the frontal (C), parietal (D), and occipital bones (E) are represented more as seam-like lines than as sawtooth interlocks, illustrating how inner cranial sutures differ morphologically from their external counterparts. The diploethe spongy bone layer between the outer and inner tables of the skullis referenced, as are various vascular foramina and venous sinuses impressions, reflecting the relationship between the skull and the protective coverings and blood supply of the brain.Original legend sheet available on request (if available due to legends of 2 plates being on 1 sheet).Made by Gerard de Lairesse after Govard Bidloo (author).Medium: Copperplate engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.Sheet size: 34.5 x 51 cm (13.58 x 20.08 inch). No binding. Govard Bidloo (author) (illustrator). Title page of Govert Bidloo's "Ontleding des Menschelyken Lichaams" (Dissection of the Human Body). This grand allegorical engraving forms the frontispiece to one of the most ambitious anatomical atlases of the 17th century. At center, a seated female figurelikely symbolizing Anatomia or Truthgestures toward a skeletal scene of dissection in the architectural background, where figures examine a cadaver. Behind her, Fame (or Science) trumpets the importance of knowledge. In front, a muscular winged Father Time steps forward, bearing a scythe and an hourglass, symbols of mortality and the transience of life. He also clutches a book, perhaps alluding to the anatomical text itself. To the right, three putti interact with anatomical models and illustrations: one lifts a skull, another unrolls a drawing, and the third consults a large folio volume. They emphasize both study and innocence in the pursuit of scientific understanding. Below the central statue pedestal is the title inscription: 'ONTLEDING DES MENSCHELYKEN LICHAAMS. Gedaan door Govard Bidloo, Anatomie Chirurgyn, Professor', engraved within a wreath of laurel. The scene is framed by heavy drapery on the left and architectural columns on the right, creating a theatrical mise-en-scène of Baroque anatomical grandeur. This engraving sets the tone for the remarkable anatomical plates that follow, combining scientific inquiry with allegorical and moral themes.Made by Gerard de Lairesse after Govard Bidloo (author).Medium: Copperplate engraving on hand laid (verge) paper.Sheet size: 34.5 x 51 cm (13.58 x 20.08 inch). Antique print, titled: ''T.40.'' - Tab.40: A richly detailed anatomical plate depicting the abdominal viscera with a focus on the mesentery (darmscheil) and the associated chylous vessels (melkaderen/gylvaten). The primary composition (Fig. I) presents the greater omentum retracted upward, exposing the coiled loops of the small intestine (kronkeldarm) and large intestine, as well as the mesenteric root and an intricate network of nerves, glands, and lymphatic vessels. Notably, the mesenteric lymph nodes and fatty connective tissues are emphasized, with vascular distribution clearly rendered. In Figures IIVI, the lacteal (chyle) vessels are tracked in their journey from the intestines to the cisterna chyli and up through the thoracic duct, with attention to valves and branchings. These illustrations are not only scientific but also serve as a visual meditation on the body's hidden architecture of nutrient transport. Govard Bidloo (author) (illustrator). Antique print, titled: ''T.48.'' - Tab. 48: Detailed anatomical studies of the penis in various states of dissection and cross-section. The central figure shows the penile shaft, opened and dissected, with both corpora cavernosa clearly revealed, wrapped in strong outer tunics and internally composed of fine fibrous partitions and vascular networks. The urethra (watergang) is situated ventrally between these bodies and supported by connective tissue. A vertical median septum divides the erectile bodies longitudinally, becoming thinner and vanishing near the glans (hoofdeken), which itself is shown in detail: richly vascularized, with muscular and membranous structures providing texture and sensitivity. Smaller figures illustrate the internal microstructure of the glans penis, the corpora cavernosa, and cross-sections showing the separation between erectile tissues and urethra. The openings of the seminal vesicles and the prostate at the base of the urethra are also marked. Several images highlight the muscular and vascular systems supporting erection and ejaculation, showing how the penis functions as a vascular and muscular organ designed for sexual reproduction and urination.
