This book is an analytical history examining the causes and consequences of abandonment and infanticide, two historically prevalent responses to the birth of unwanted children. The author begins by examining ancient societies where these were common practices, and continues through the Middle Ages, looking at the social and economic factors that contributed to the persistence of infanticide and abandonment. Drawing on a broad range of historical research, the author argues that both practices were far more common than previously believed and were not confined to any single culture or era. This book is a valuable contribution to the literature on the history of poverty and social policy. It provides a detailed historical overview, analyzing complex social problems, and shedding light on the origins of some of todayâs social issues. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
