Michael Gouge and Pan Michaleris edited this volume on simulating metal additive manufacturing with thermo-mechanical finite element models. It has three parts and an appendix. Part I sets out the basics. It surveys earlier modeling work on welding, directed energy deposition and powder bed fusion, and lists the main problems a model must handle: adding material, heat input, thermal losses, distortion and residual stress, material properties that change with temperature, microstructural change, and long run times. A chapter on the finite element method follows. It covers decoupled thermal and mechanical models, small and large deformation theory, and the quiet, inactive and hybrid ways of activating new material. Part II deals with directed energy deposition. It covers convection losses and losses from part fixturing during laser cladding, phase-field and finite element modeling of microstructure, thin walls, and large builds. Part III turns to powder bed processes and includes a chapter validating models against the America Makes builds.…
