True tale by Frederick John Gorst, who was seventy-three at the time of this book's publishing and long a resident of the USA, is perhaps one of the few people alive today who was working in the great English houses around the turn of the century. He worked his way up from a young page boy in a theological seminary to the estate of a country squire, then to the elegant Georgian mansion of the two eccentric nephews of Gladstone. He became personal footman to the lovely Lady Howard and finally reached the top as one of the four royal footmen to the Duke and Duchess of Portland.
