8vo; original brown boards; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. viii + 408; black-and-white photographs. Folding chart of the Archibald family tree inserted loose. Dustwrapper a bit rubbed and edgeworn; corners a little bumped; light spotting to endpapers and edges. Very good condition. "This absorbing book tells the story of one of South Africa's pioneering families. From the colourful days of the Namaqualand copper boom where the first South African Robert Archibald looked for Eldorado, Through the turbulent and exciting period when his son Robert Montgomery was caught up in the Kimberley diamond rush, and grew in stature to become the last Mr Speaker of the Natal Legislative Assembly; Into the twentieth century when Robert George Archibald was besieged in Ladysmith, involved in the Bambata Rebellion and became the dedicated architect of the family home at "Invernettie". And even later we see Robert Brian Archibald playing the role of teacher and, as member of the Provincial Executive Council, participating in the development of education in the Province and the affairs of the Natal South Coast. 'Honour Without Riches' has been inspired by the rediscovery of some boxes of lively and informative family letters and diaries. In the sympathetic hands of Dr Ruth Gordon, who has edited them with obvious enjoyment, they tell of some of the great events of our history and give also a unique insight into the pleasures and hardships of South African life in the nineteenth century.".

Gordon, V. E. C / Mock, Ruth. Twentieth-century handwriting. London: Methuen, 1960, 84pp., very good price-clipped dust-jacket, very good orange cloth. Many illustrations of contemporary hand-writing throughout, as the authors argue against the teaching of perfect cursive writing in schools. Interesting and down to earth.
