There is a hand-written prize inscription on the front fly-leaf. A delightful, fairly scarce, period piece.

Die Flotte richtet sich aber nicht nur gegen das Mutterland des Empires, also England; sondern sie war eben auch ein multifuktionelles Instrument. Der Kaiser sah in der Flottenpolitik eine Konvergenz von Innen- und Außenpolitik, wobei die Hauptfunktionen der Schlachtflotte darin bestanden, erstens die Küste Deutschlands zu verteidigen; zweitens den Handel und die Kolonien zu schützen; drittens ein patriotisches Identifikationssymbol zu stiften; viertens innenpolitische Krisen zu bewältigen und letztendlich Deutschland mehr Gewicht auf der politischen Weltbühne zu geben. Gleich am Anfang seiner Regentschaft versprach der Kaiser den Deutschen herrliche Zeiten mit der Zukunft der Nation auf dem Wasser liegend, aber er führte sie in die Katastrophe des Ersten Weltkriegs. Ein wesentlicher Faktor für den Untergang des Reiches lag in der Navalisierung der deutschen Politik. Doch das Zusammenwirken von Wilhlems Charakter, der Machtkonstellation um den Kaiser, des seltsamen Verhältnisses mit England, des Weltmachtstrebens sowie der internationalen Spannungen jener Zeit hatte den Navalisierungsprozess in einem fünfjährigen Zeitraum (1897-1902) zwangsläufig beschleunigen müssen. Natürlich ist diese Diplomarbeit kein Ersatz für detaillierte Darstellungen der kaiserlichen Flotte von der Thronbesteigung des Kaisers bis zum Ende des Deutschen Reiches; und zwangsläufig bleiben viele Dimensionen der Flottenpolitik in diesem Beitrag unberücksichtigt. Doch diese Arbeit bietet den Lesern einen Blick auf neue Aspekte der kaiserlichen Flottenpolitik, die historischen und wissenschaftlichen Darstellungen bisweilen fehlen.
