Nach Abschluß des Studiums war er ab 1828 als Lehrer tätig, u.a. beim Grafen Westphalen. Er gehörte ab 1850 dem Erfurter Parlament an, übernahm jedoch bald darauf die Leitung einer Gewerbeschule in Trier bis 1875 (später Realschule). Seine literarische Tätigkeit ist der Ausbreitung und Vertiefung des Verständnisses klassischer Dichter gewidmet gewesen, wobei "Goethe's Leben, Geistesentwicklung und Werke" als sein Hauptwerk gilt. (Zitat nach ADB) Zu seinen Lebzeiten erschienen vier Auflagen desselben.
