First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Scarce early edition, being the third printing from 1940, just one month after the first printing, of this expose on the nascent Communist movement in the U.S. by one of the founding members of the party, who later turned away from the movement towards conservatism as NY state senator. Well kept copy, being remarkably well bound for a book of its age and nature. 611 pages in boards, no DJ present if there ever was one. Red boards are clean and firm, though the rear board at some point suffered some minor water exposure, leaving slight evidence to the exterior, and more prominently noticeable on the interior pastedown and the very last page of the book. Sadly two pages of the index have come loose, but are present, and no other pages are loose at all. No marks to interior, pages minorly age toned but still clean. Pages bumped in the upper corner from about pages 85 to page 540, as is the same corner on the front and rear board. From the home of a tobacco smoker, so there is a faint odor to sensitive noses, although mostly just smells like an old book ! A nice copy of this scarce edition of an important volume.

Flyer promoting a talk by the New York-based socialist politician Benjamin Gitlow (1891-1965), a founding member of the CPUSA who later in life turned conservative and McCarthyist. The present item dates from Gitlow's tenure with the Workers Party, on whose ticket he ran for Governor of New York in 1926. The talk, held at the radical Rand School, addressed such questions as "Will the Socialist Party Go Left or Right?" and "Will the Socialist Party split?"
