Contact seller5-star sellerNine vols. Folio. 11.25 x 14.2 in. [112 unnumbered leaves]., including first leaf w/ illustrated photogravure vignette and rubricated decorated initial, w/ 81 photogravure plates (some w/ colour-tinting), nearly all preserving tissue guards. Burgundy-coloured cloth over burgundy-coloured coloured softcovers, all front covers let…tered & illustrated in gilt (couple corners w/ slight creasing, slight sunning to couple covers, few tissue guards w/ creasing, or folds, 1 vol. w/ minor soiling & tide markings), still a VG set, stapled as issued. First edition of this uncommon and complete photogravure art set filled with the remarkable images of Benjamin Gifford, issued in conjunction with the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in Seattle, WA. Gifford (1859-1936) is considered perhaps Oregon's most famous photographer, and his beautiful images included here depict a Brass Era automobile driving on Sandy Road to Mt. Hood; Forestry Building from the 1905 Lewis & Clark Exposition; Fish wheel on the Columbia River; Multnomah Falls; a sternwheeler steamship on the Columbia River; aftermath of Mt. Hood forest fire; Birds-eye view of the Lewis & Clark Exposition grounds; three views of Celilo Falls including two of Native Americans fishing; downtown Portland, OR, and others. Many of the photogravures also depict the Deschutes River, the Rogue River Valley, Mount Washington, log rafts on the Columbia River, and Latourelle Falls. Gifford first worked in Portland until 1895, then opened a studio in The Dalles, and later returned to Portland in 1910, where he continued to operate both studios until about 1920. Later his son Ralph I. Gifford took over operation of the studio, and continued to operate the business. Williams (1823-1910) served as chief justice of the Oregon Territory Supreme Court, delegate to the statehood constitutional convention, was a key figure in his ruling that slavery was not legal in Oregon, and later aggressively prosecuted cases against the Klu Klux Klan for President Grant. Although he served as mayor from 1902-1905, his tenure during the Lewis & Clark Exposition, featured considerable police and political corruption, and failed to stem either gambling, or prostitution in the City. Walter D. Harney (b. 1869) was a noted newspaper and magazine publisher in Oshkosh and Racine, Wisconsin who published several of these promotional works on Oregon, Spokane, and Tacoma, eventually moving to King County before World War I himself. These could either be purchased originally in fascicles, or all nine bound together in full calf binding, which is the much more common appearance of the set. There are variations in the Gifford photos featured in individual sets.
