Add to basketPaperback. Condition: Very Good. The previous volume of this atlas was the result of the first national survey of breeding birds in Britain and Ireland and its maps presented data only in the confirmed or probable breeding of each species in each grid square. In this more detailed volume, each species account includes three maps, one showing breeding distribution as before, one in full colour showing relative abundance of the species throughout its range, and one highlighting changes in distribution between the current and original surveys. A text, tables and vignette complete each double-page spread. A detailed introduction outlines the methods used in the survey work and explains the various analyses of the data gathered. Appendices give details of rare breeders as well as extra tabular data. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

A Very Heavy Book which will incur extra postage overseas. Blue cloth boards with gold lettering and decoration to spine. Faint foxing showing to top edge. The pictorial Dust Jacket has some light foxing to the inside. 520 Pages. The publication in 1976 of The Atlas of Breeding Birds in Britain and Ireland on behalf of the British Trust for Ornithology and the Irish Wildbird Conservancy heralded a new era in ornithology. This was the first attempt to map the distributions of an entire breeding avifauna at a national level in an objective manner. It presented the results of a field survey which recorded the presence or absence of all breeding bird species within each 10km square of the national grid over the five year period from 1968 - 72. Twenty years on, the BTO and the IWC, this time in association with the Scottish Ornithologist Club, repeated the survey using similar methods, albeit with one important difference, by visiting tetrads (2 km - squares) within each 10 km square an estimate of the abundance of each species in each 10 km square was also obtained. The results of the survey are presented here in The New Atlas of Breeding Birds in Britain and Ireland 1988 - 1991. This volume differs from its predecessor in that instead of presenting a single distribution map for each species, most species accounts include three maps, one of distribution, one of abundance - represented using innovative colour cartography techniques - and one of the change in distribution since 1968-72. The change maps, in particular, serve to highlight species whose populations may be under threat. An introductory chapter describing the methods used, and rationale behind their adoption, is followed by 208 full species accounts and 13 brief accounts of rare breeders. A series of chapters then discuss ways in which methodological biases were dealt with, the manner in which population size were estimated and recent changes in the status of British and Irish breeding birds.

Compiled by David W. Gibbons, James B. Reid, and Robert A. Chapman, this atlas presents detailed accounts of bird species observed during the 1988 to 1991 breeding seasons. The publication offers full species accounts, each accompanied by concise text summarising distribution, abundance, and changes since earlier surveys. It also provides detailed summaries of survey methods and data analysis, ensuring transparency and reproducibility in ornithological research. This atlas serves as an essential reference for ornithologists, conservationists, and bird enthusiasts, offering insights into the status and trends of breeding bird populations in Britain and Ireland during the late 20th century.

This more detailed volume presents three maps for each species account: one showing breeding distribution as before; a second in full colour showing relative abundance of the species throughout its range; and a third map highlighting changes in distribution between the current and original surveys. Text, tables, and vignette complete each double-page spread. A detailed introduction outlines the methods used in the survey work and explains the various analyses of the data gathered.
