Viveu em Zurique grande parte da sua vida, com exceção dos anos 1749/50, vivendo nesses dois anos em Berlim e Hamburgo, tendo servido como aprendiz de empregado de livraria. Regressa então a Zurique, onde abre uma editora em conjunto com o pai e se torna redator na Gazeta da Segunda-Feira, esta impressa por seu pai. Mais tarde torna-se diretor da Biblioteca Pública de Zurique. Cultiva a pintura e artes gráficas como principais projetos, começando a escrever poesia em 1751, publicando Lied eines Schweizers an sein bewaffnetes Mädchen, que lhe granjeou reputação junto dos intelectuais da época. Continua a poesia bucólica enquanto desenha as paisagens para acompanhar os textos como gravuras, sendo estes publicados em 1756, no seu livro intitulado Idyllen, que lhe trará grande fama.
