Heinrich Gottfried Wilhelm DANIELS (1754 - 1827) was initially a lawyer, and since 1784 a law professor at the University of Bonn. With the invasion of the French in 1797, the University of Bonn was dissolved, Daniels lost his law chair and moved to Cologne. In 1804, a law school was founded in Koblenz. Daniels was appointed there and faced the task of teaching the new (French) law. His German translation of the Code civil in 1805 was masterly. Daniels was so respected in French circles that he was appointed to the Court of Cassation in Paris on the occasion of Napoleon's visit to Cologne in September 1804. Mit dem Einmarsch der Franzosen wurde 1797 die Universität Bonn aufgelöst, Daniels verlor seinen Rechtsstuhl und zog nach Köln um. Als 1804 in Koblenz eine Rechtsschule gegründet worden ist. Dorthin wurde Daniels berufen, der sich der Aufgabe gegenüber sah, das neue (französische) Recht lehren zu sollen. Meisterhaft seine deutsche Übersetzung des Code civil im Jahre 1805. Daniels war in französischen Kreisen derart geachtet, daß er anläßlich des Besuches von Napoleon in Köln, September 1804, nach Paris an den dortigen Kassationshof berufen worden ist.
