Op het einde van het academiejaar 1997-1998 zal Reginald de Schryver tot het emeritaat worden toegelaten. Hij zal dan bijna veertig jaar lang aan de Leuvense universiteit verbonden zijn geweest, vanaf 1971 als gewoon hoogleraar. Hij doceerde onder meer Europese cultuurgeschiedenis, geschiedenis van de Nederlanden en historiografie. Zijn belangstelling als onderzoeker richtte zich vooral op de politieke en diplomatieke geschiedenis van het Ancien Regime, de geschiedenis van de Vlaamse Beweging en de geschiedenis van de geschiedschrijving. Dit laatste thema staat centraal in De lectuur van het verleden. Reeds vanaf het begin van de jaren zeventig publiceerde Reginald de Schryver studies over onderwerpen als de vormgeving van het nationale verleden, de periodisering van de geschiedenis, de historische terminologie en het ontstaan en doorleven van historische genres als de wereldgeschiedenis. Zijn interesse was breed. Zij gold niet alleen de ?echte? geschiedschrijving, maar ook andere gestalten van de omgang met het verleden, zoals de historische roman en de historische illustratie. Chronologische en geografische grenzen waren evenmin richtinggevend. Reginald de Schryver bewonderde de middeleeuwse kronieken, maar ook de wetenschappelijke producten uit het atelier van Ranke, hij schreef over de Belgische geschiedenissen, maar ook over het werk van de Franse philosophes. In 1990 verscheen zijn inmiddels herhaaldelijk herdrukte Historiografie. Vijfentwintig eeuwen geschiedschrijving van West-Europa. Diezelfde breedheid van geest werd in dit liber amicorum nagestreefd. De lectuur van het verleden bevat opstellen over zowel ?de nationale geschiedenis als ideologische verdoving? als de erudiete historiografie, zowel de antieke geschiedschrijving als de Goldhagen-affaire, zowel de humanistische historische cultuur in Spanje als de receptie van Voltaire in Belgie. Op die manier hebben de auteurs van dit boek getracht een weerspiegeling te bieden van de wijze waarop Reginald de Schryver het verleden van zijn discipline heeft gelezen. Zij hadden daarbij een helder en sensitief portret voor ogen, een portret als het schilderij dat Joseph Severn in 1821 van zijn vriend John Keats vervaardigde. 0 g.
