First Edition
Hardcover. Foreword by Anthony Blunt. Small 4to. Grey cloth with gilt spine lettering, pictorial price-clipped dust jacket. xi, (Ca. 60pp). 59 full-page sepia-tone plates. Near fine/very good. Linen-textured jacket mildly edgeworn, with spine sunned and some short edge tears archivally mended on verso. First English-language edition, being a facsimile of the 1948 suite of engravings (limited to 450 copies distributed by Editions de l'Etoile Filante of Paris). C.F. MacIntyre translates Roualt's brief preface and British art historian Blunt a useful foreword. French Expressionist artist and printmaker Roualt (1871-1958) created most of these engravings of his vision of Psalm 51 during World War One but continued work on them long after. A sharp copy and uncommon in the evocative jacket.
