"Este libro ha sido fruto de un interés personal por la teoría de la acción, resultante a su vez de mi interés por normas y valores. Me sentía en un principio atraído por los aspectos lógico-formales de los conceptos relativos a la acción. Era este un campo poco cultivado anteriormente, pero cuya elucidación parecía imponerse si la «lógica deóntica» había de contar con una base firme. De modo que, finalmente, lo que comenzara siendo un estudio de la acción llegó a convertirse en una contribución a la venerable cuestión de cómo se relacionan las ciencias de la naturaleza con el estudio del hombre. Los problemas aquí planteados son controvertibles, han sido muy debatidos y revisten gran complejidad. Nunca había sentido antes con tanta fuerza los peligros de un malentendido, incluso de orden terminológico. La sustancia de una opinión de un autor no deja de verse comprometida con la fraseología de las contadas tesis que proponga y defienda. Yo, por ejemplo, puedo confesar mi deseo de defender un punto de vista a tenor del cual las acciones humanas no pueden tener causas. Pero muchos autores, antes como ahora, mantienen que las acciones pueden ser causadas. ¿Discrepo de ellos? No necesariamente. Pues quienes piensan que las acciones tienen causas emplean a menudo «causa» en un sentido mucho más laxo que yo cuando niego tal cosa. O pueden entender por «acción» algo diferente. Bien puede ocurrir, entonces, que las «acciones» según su acepción tengan «causas» en el sentido en que yo entiendo estas, o que las «acciones» en mi terminología tengan «causas» en la suya. No estoy empeñado en que mi uso sea el mejor o el más natural de los disponibles en el lenguaje ordinario.
