[Hood] Fitch (1817-1892). 8-1/2" x 5-7/8" Thomas Anderson "studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, graduating with an MD in 1853. While at University…he became interested in botany, and earned a gold medal for the best local collection of plants, and assisted in arranging the Indian herbarium. In 1854 he entered the Bengal medical service, and went to Calcutta. Subsequently he went to Delhi, where he was actively engaged during the mutiny, returning to Calcutta in 1858. His health failing, he came home, and, the steamer being detained at Aden for some days, he made an interesting collection of the plants of that region, upon which he based his 'Florula Adenensis,' published in 1860." [wiki]. Walter Fitch was a botanical illustrator from Scotland. Fitch's illustration have appeared in Curtis's Botanical Magazine, most publications issued by Royal Botanical Gardens Kew, George Bentham's 'Handbook of the British Flora', James Bateman's "A Monograph of Odontoglossum" and William Hooker's "A century of Orchidaceous Plants". "Fitch was made a fellow of the Linnean Society in 1857." [wiki]. The previous owner inscription reads "Skipper Kent 1953". Skipper Kent was a restauranteur in the San Francisco Bay Area, owning Zombie Village in Oakland and Skipper Kent's in San Francisco. These "tiki" inspired restaurants were his pride and joy as he was already and avid collector of Polynesian art and artifacts. Kent was also an avid orchid collector, so we suspect this was in his library at one time, with his interest in botany. The embossed library stamp comes from the library of Herman Knoche (1870-1945). Knoche was born in San Jose, California and studied botany at Stanford University. He moved to France to further his studies at University of Montpellier; his particular interest was island vegetation. Boards and edges are rubbed/(scuffed), some tears to the paper wrapped boards (especially lower board and corners), some soiling to boards and back strip, blue ink inscription to ffep - possible previous signature, some soiling to end papers (particularly to fore-edge), embossed library stamp to head of "List of Papers" (a.k.a. table of contents), age toning to leaves, water damage to fore-edge of leaves as well as a bit to tail -going towards middle of leaves, water damage is most noticeable on the leaves with illustrations (see photos), some light chipping and creasing to lower corner of last few leaves. A Good copy. Period binding, stamped in gilt to back strip, black ink stain to all edges.

Large octavo (23.5 cm) re-bound in recent dark green cloth, gilt titles to spine in black compartment; illustrations include frontispiece (View of Clarence Harbour at Fernando Po), two views of the Niger River…, map of the west coast of Africa, fifty engraved botanical plates (seven fold-outs) bound in at rear. New endpapers and fly leaves, head and tail pieces in a first rate library binding. Two unobtrusive library stamps and in blind on the plates. A number of related works and collections of notes were bound under this title partly owing to the death of the chief botanist of the expedition Theodore Vogel leaving his extensive collections and notes to W. J. Hooker to be edited and published eight years later, and partly to the inclusion of observations by others at several stops along the way including Madeira, Teneriffe, and the Cape Verde Islands. The complete contents under the general editorship of W. J. Hooker, then, include 'Memoir of the life of Dr. J. R. T. Vogel' by L. C. Treviranus (M. J. Berkeley, trans.); 'Journal of the Voyage to the Niger'; 'Botany of the Niger Expedition' by W. J. and J. D. Hooker including Madeira, Teneriffe, and the Cape de Verd Islands; Spicilegia Gorgonea; or a Catalogue of All the Plants as yet Discovered in the Cape de Verd Islands' by P. B. Webb; Flora Nigritiana; or, a Catalogue of the Plants of the River Niger, the Island of Fernando Po, and the Adjacent Parts of Western Tropical Africa. from the Collections of Dr. Th. Vogel' by J. D. Hooker and George Bentham. The Niger expedition set out in 1841 under the command of Capt. H. D. Trotter with the avowed intent of loosening the grip of the slave trade in the region "by the encouragement of lawful trade" and the propagation of Christian virtue (It had as its sponsor the African Civilization Society), as well as gathering botanical specimens for study. The expedition, however, met with disaster. Not only was its chief botanist struck down by "fever" but so were a large number of the others, sailors and scientists alike. It is reported 49 of 145 members of the expedition returned to England safely despite what W. J. Hooker describes as precautions against the dangers of exploring tropical Africa. Little scattered foxing is not objectionable, several small tears skilfully repaired; otherwise a clean, bright, sound copy of quite a scarce book.
