Israel Union List) - Die etwas aufwendiger ausgestatteten 'Bildergrüße' von 1896 ff. erschienen in min. grösserem Format (ca. 26.5 x 21 cm), doch fällt das vorliegende Exemplar der 'Volksausgabe' demgegenüber nicht wesentlich ab. - "Ich habe Palästina mit der Absicht durchwandert, für die heiligen Schriften anschauliches Verständnis zu gewinnen, indem ich seine Hügel und Thäler, Flüsse und Seen, Ebenen und Gebirge, Pflanzen und Tiere, seinen Himmel und Erdboden kennen lernte, vor allem aber die Bilder aus dem Altertume beobachtete, wie sie sich heute noch überall im täglichen Leben wiederspiegeln [sic]. [.] An Ort und Stelle habe ich mir die gegebenen Verhältnisse zum Aufschluß über die ehemalige Lage der Stätten dienen lassen [.]. Ein Blick auf das Inhaltsverzeichnis läßt den Leser erkennen, daß ihm allmählich das ganze Land vom äußersten Süden bis zur nördlichsten Grenze vorgeführt werden wird, also von Berseba an bis Damaskus, Balbeck und Beirut, ein Gebiet, das das ganze Palästina alten und Neuen Testaments umschließt." Daß eine beträchtliche Anzahl Juden jemals dorthin zurückkehren wird, dünkt mir höchst unwahrscheinlich. Der Israelit müht sich nicht gern mit Ackerbau ab; er findet seine Freude im Handel [.]. [.] In der That leben die Juden, welche sich gegenwärtig im Lande ihrer Väter aufhalten, im äußersten Elende [.].
