Old hand signature on paste down with 1870 dated ownership to flyleaf. 17th century signature on front title page. Interior lightly toned with minimal foxing. Ink markings on bottom fore-edge. Free of known markings. Binding intact. Please see photos. Lovely, high-quality edition of Bartolommeo Gavanto's (1569-1638) Thesaurus in four volumes bound in one. Gavanto was an Italian Barnabite priest and liturgist who devoted most of his life to liturgical studies. He was recognized as the most accurate knowledge of sacred rites in Rome. He was named perpetual consultor to the Sacred Congregation of Rite by Pope Urban VIII. This is his chief work where he traces the historical original of the sacred rites themselves, treats of their mystical significance, gives rules as to the observance and obligation of the rubrics and adds decrees and brief explanations bearing on the subject-matter of the work. It was dedicated to his patron, Pope Urban. Printed by Plantin Press with Balthasar Moretus or Balthasar I Moretus's devices. He was a Flemish printer and head of the Officina Plantiniana, the printing company established by his grandfather Christophe Plantin in Antwerp in 1555. He was the son of Martina Plantin and Jan Moretus.

ZVDD) - Vol. I mit Leben und Werk (Vita, & Scriptis) Gavantis (pp. X-XVIII), resp. von Merati (pp. XVIII-XXII). -- Bartolomeo Gavanti, Oratore sacro e liturgista nato a Milano nel 1569, morto ivi il 14 agosto 1638. Entrò tra i barnabiti nel 1587. Fu incaricato da Clemente VIII e da Urbano VIII della riforma del breviario. L'opera sua principale è: Commentaria in rubricas Missalis et Breviarii Romani sive Thesaurus SS. Rituum, Roma 1628, testo classico di cui si conoscono almeno 27 edizioni fino al 1823, oltre a parecchie di un compendio. (Treccani it, online) - Wetzer/Welte sprechen mit viel Respekt von Gavanti als berühmtem Liturgiker "und Consultor der heiligen Congregation der Riten: eine Auszeichnung, welche er wegen seiner großen Kenntnisse im liturgischen Fache sehr verdiente." (Bd. 5, 2. Aufl. 1888, sp. 122). Papst Clemens VIII hatte ihn im frühen 17. Jh. in die Kommission zur Revision von Missale und Brevier berufen. "Gavantis berühmtestes Werk Ist: 1. Thesaurus sacrorum rituum [.], das vielleicht in der katholischen Welt am weitesten verbreitete und am häufigsten gebrauchte rituelle Handbuch, welches die heiligen Gebräuche der Kirche in Messe und Tagzeiten beschreibt, ihre Bedeutung und Geschichte erklärt und die Vorschriften der Kirche, welche die Art und Weise der Abhaltung des Gottesdienstes regelt, mittheilt. Merati, aus dem Theatinerorden (gest. 1745 zu Rom) veranstaltete [.] eine neue Ausgabe des Thesaurus mit vielen Verbesserungen und Zusätzen [4 Bde. 1736-38, 5 Bde. 1736-1740], und in dieser Gestalt ist Gavantis Werk das geschätzteste Handbuch hauptsächlich für die Praxis. Andere Werke sind: 2. Ordo perpetuus recitandi officium divinum; 3. Manuale Episcoporum; 4. Praxis visitationis [.]. Diese beiden Werke, hie und da dem Thesaurus angehängt, sind ebenfalls sehr geschätzt und instructiv für alle diejenigen, welche mit der Verwaltung einer Diöcese betraut sind." (op. cit. sp. 123).
