The plan, codenamed Operation Husky, fixed Malta as the launching site for the fighter and fighter-bomber offensive. "Spitfires over Sicily" provides a day-by-day historical account of Malta Spitfire operations, leading up to and during the invasion, interspersed with personal accounts of some of those involved. Illustrated with up to 100 photographs including Spitfires of many of the squadrons involved, their pilots and adversaries, this account features Spitfires versus Messerschmitts and Macchis plus RAF and USAAF versus JG53 and JG77 and Italians. It also includes USAAF's 31st Fighter Group and a host of personal accounts.

Most of the Hurricanes which held this tiny outpost of the British Empire in the heart of Axis-dominated territory had been flown from the decks of aircraft carriers or from bases in North Africa, while a handful of fighter pilots arrived by Sunderland flying boats or other aircraft in transit from the UK via Gibraltar. Many of these pilots were inexperienced and quickly paid the supreme price, particularly when the Messerschmitt pilots of the elite 7/JG26 arrived in Sicily in early 1941, and later in the year when more from JG53 made their presence felt. About the book >.>.> During the First World War, work at HMS Vernon concentrated on torpedo trials and training and the research and development of anti-submarine devices and training in their use as well as mines and ships' electrics. On 1st October, 1923, HMS Vernon (or 'The Vernon' as it came to be known) was established ashore on the site of the old Gunwharf (now the development known as Gunwharf Quays) and Mining, Whitehead [Torpedo] and Electrical departments were formed. The original names of the Vernon hulks were adopted for buildings in the shore base. During the Second World War, HMS Vernon became responsible for mine disposal and mine countermeasures. Her officers and scientific staff achieved several coups involving the capture of mines and the development of countermeasures. (LL).
