Some edge wear, chipping, short closed tears and small loss to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners rubbed with small loss, some slight overall dust and time staining. Not price clipped (6s), previous owner's name in pencil to ffep, internally clean tight and square, overall a reasonable copy for its age. 104pp. Frederic who is shy and sensitive, and Hugo who is heartless and aggressive. Frederic is in love with a hussy who is in love with Hugo. To save Frederic from an unhappy marriage, Hugo tries to distract him by bringing to a ball a beautiful dancer who masquerades as a mysterious personage and becomes the triumph of the occasion. She is a susceptible maiden in her own right. She not only breaks up all the cynical romances that have been going on before she arrived, but loses her own heart as well. Jean Marie Lucien Pierre Anouilh (1910-87), was a French dramatist whose career spanned five decades. Though his work ranged from high drama to absurdist farce, Anouilh is best known for his 1943 play Antigone, an adaptation of Sophocles' classical drama, that was seen as an attack on Marshal Petain's Vichy government. One of France's most prolific writers after World War II, much of Anouilh's work deals with themes of maintaining integrity in a world of moral compromise.

Batsford first editions identified by--'to 1959 no later printings mentioned'). 68 pages of text, 4 page unnumbered Index, Color frontispiece, 5 additional color plates, 66 black and white plates on full-page semi-glossy paper, and 66 pages (also on semi-glossy paper) 'devoted to announcements by art dealers, most of whom are owners of Georgian works of art.' These pages bring the book to a close. Once listed, I believe this will be the Only copy for sale with an intact dust jacket (see first three photos). The covers of the book itself are in very nice condition. They are exceptionally clean. I don't see any conspicuous soiling. The gilt design on the front is nicely bright, the gilt lettering on the spine is also nicely bright. There's a little crinkling at the spine ends, the bottom one also has a spot of rubbing. The cover edges look very good. The top corners have only speck-sized spots of superficial rubbing. The front bottom corner has a fairly small spot of rub-through. The page edges look perfectly clean. There is a bump/crease just below the front top corner and another just above the rear bottom corner. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and end papers form a green and white floral decoration. They look very good, though there are a few areas with mild toning. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. I have turned over pretty much all of the pages. They are exceptionally clean. I don't think I saw any soiling at all, certainly nothing conspicuous. That includes all of the illustrations/ plates. There are two pages with a small rectangular shadow just off their top edge, no doubt created by a piece of paper taking up residence there. The only imperfection I'm seeing is a tiny crease just below the tips of the top corners of a large number of consecutive pages. There are no placeholder creases. No markings of any kind. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. I have always had the jacket in a fitted protective cover. In fact it had one when I first purchased the book many years ago. I've just now removed it in order to avoid the glare it will create in the photographs. I will replace it with a new protective cover afterward. I can now tell you that the previous owner placed four small pieces of tape on the inside (hidden) of the jacket. One you can make out at the front bottom corner, the second one is behind the thin tear off the front bottom edge. One is behind the top edge of the spine and the other behind the bottom edge of the spine, neither of those seemed necessary. You can of course see the soiling over parts of the front cover. There is also light wear off the jacket's top edges-- crinkling off the front one and nicks off the rear one. There is a large, neat, clip off the top edge of the front flap. I'm not sure why since the price is off the bottom edge of the front flap. It is intact. There is no other print on either flap. Here are the Contents: Preface by the Editor R. R. Tatlock. The third in the series of Burlington monographs, following Chinese and Spanish art publications. A good black cloth hardback with gilt motif to front and gilt title to spine. Some rubbing and bumping and sun fading to areas of the cover. 3.5cm tear to cloth at tail of spine. Pictorial endpapers - cracked at front joint. Text is bright and clean throughout, and soundly bound. Text in English. Colour Frontispiece + 68pp text + numerous plates + 4pp Index + an extensive section of art dealer advertisements.
