Hardcover. Condition: Poor. Brown cloth covers with blind stamped design which exhibit very heavy wear and soiling. Gold lettering and design on the spine is faded and soiled. Heavy wear, fraying and bumping to corners and spine ends. Heavy wear, soiling and fraying on edges. Small chips on back cover hinges. Moderate wear and soiling on hinges. Inside hinges are cracked with various pages loose from the spine. Previous owners name on the upper edge of the inside back cover. Heavy soiling, yellowing and foxing to inside front and back covers, ffep's, bfep's and text. One page of the bfep's is missing. 2 very nice hand colored illustrations in the front of the book are in fine condition. Three hundred b&w illustrations. A larger octavo in half black leather over pebbled dark green boards of a title fairly common in reprints but not in the 1849 first printing, as here. Considerable scattered foxing, though none serious enough to impair readability. Previous owner's name "75 Alex I. Dupont" in pencil to top of title page. (There are an Alex I. Dupont school district and a pair of Alex I. Dupont schools in Delaware.) Faded but still legible inscription to otherwise blank FFE (we have artificially darkened our scan of this page to enhance legibility) reads: "du Pont / Dec. 3d 1855 / Monday Evening. / Hagley - Near Wilmington / Christiana Hd. / On the Brandywine" ("Delaware" is crossed out, here, and replaced with "Brandywine." The Brandywine and Christina creeks join at Wilmington to flow into the Delaware. The Dupont family fortune grew largely from the black powder works operated 1803-1921 at Hagley along the Brandywine, the property now preserved as a museum. And yes, Dec. 3 was a Monday.) The 46 plates including the hand-colored frontisipiece of the Sioux warrior Wahk-Ta-Ge-Li have been counted and enumerated on a laid-in card. Moulton's book bought at 1856."CONDITION: Good, modest discoloration to front cover, small losses to cloth in gutters, offsetting at endpapers from newsprint, dampstains at foot of endpapers, and along bottom edge of text for approx. 10 pp. and last few pages, occasional foxing, sound binding. Popular account of various Indian wars.
