Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First impression of the true first edition. Colour jacket design and colour full-page frontispiece by Charles Keeping. ***Very good in lime green-mustard-buff cloth-covered boards with brown titles to spine. Lime green-mustard-buff-coloured front a…nd rear free endpapers and pastedowns. Top edge of text-block foxed not affecting interior pages. Pages clean and bright. No inscriptions. Spine tight. ***In a very good price-clipped colour illustrated dustwrapper. Head and tail of spine and edges of dustwrapper slightly rubbed and creased. Rear panel of dustwrapper slightly rubbed and discoloured (being matt white background). Front panel and spine of dustwrapper bright. 284 pages. 216 x 142 mm. ***'A new book by P. L. Travers creator of the classic Mary Poppins stories is an event, and "Friend Monkey" has for a long time been eagerly awaited. ***"Who is Monkey?" One might as well ask, "What is the wind?" for Monkey is the kind of character that cannot be explained except in terms of the book he inhabits. The story tells of his departure from the jungle, his arrival in England in 1897, the people he befriends - Mr. Linnet, Miss Brown-Potter, the one and only Professor McWhirter, Louis the cockatoo - and what happens to them as a result of this befriending. ***"You could say," says P. L. Travers, "that the book is the result of a long brooding on the idea of Hanuman, the monkey lord of the Hindu myths, who could never do anything by halves." But this monkey is anything but a myth. He is utterly tangible and real, and the story, with its masterly mixture of fact and imagination, sweeps us through a series of adventures to a conclusion as inevitable as it is unexpected. Funny and touching by turns, full of disciplined wit and wisdom, the book is a commentary, at once wry and poetic, on the verb "to love". It is not only a book for children but for all ages.' (Quote taken from inside front flap of jacket blurb). ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Charles Keeping (Jacket design and frontispiece) (illustrator).

Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. New condition white boards, white spine and black spine lettering contained in a fine condition price-clipped photographic dust jacket. Includes Introduction and Acknowledgments. Illustrated with black-and-white photographic frontispiece. "William F. Buckley's sketches and…vignettes of the prominent people of his time are absolute gems, and so are the introductions by James Rosen. A book to own, to read - and to read again." - Brit Hume, senior political analyst, Fox News Channel. "William F. Buckley was both an ideological warrior and a bon vivant with a talent for friendship. He understood that a well-lived life should be simultaniously serious and fun, and that a death calls for a summing up, both measured and elegant. This volume gathers some of Buckley's best eulogies, deftly placed in context byJames Rosen." - George F. Will, Washington Post columnist. "William F. Buckley, Jr. remembers - as only he could - the towering figures of the twentieth century in a brilliant and emotionally powerful collection, compiled by acclaimed Fox News correspondent James Rosen. In a half century on the national stage, William F. Buckley, Jr. achieved a unique stature as a writer, a celebrity, and the undisputed godfather of modern American conservatism. He kept company with the best and brightest, the sultry and powerful. Ronald Reagan pronounced WFB "perhaps the most influential journalist and intellectual in our era," and his jet-setting life was a who's who of high society, fame, and fortune. Among all his distinctions, which include founding the conservative magazine National Review and hosting the long-running talk show Firing Line, Buckley was also a master of that most elusive art form: the eulogy. He drew on his unrivaled gifts to mourn, celebrate, or seek mercy for the men and women who touched his life and the nation. Now, for the first time, WFB's sweeping judgments of the great figures of his time - presidents and prime ministers, celebrities and scoundrels, intellectuals and guitar gods - are collected in one place. A Torch Kept Lit presents more than fifty of Buckley's best eulogies, drawing on his personal memories and private correspondences and using a novelist's touch to conjure his subjects as he knew them. We are reintroduced, through Buckley's eyes, to the likes of Winston Churchill and Ronald Reagan, Elvis Presley and John Lennon, Truman Capote and Martin Luther King, Jr.this volume sheds light on a tumultuous period in American history - from World War II to Watergate, the "death" of God to the Grateful Dead - as told in the inimitable voice of one of our most elegant literary stylists. William F. Buckley, Jr. is back - just when we need him most.". Elias, Maria (book design); Galella, Ron (frontispiece photograph); Forner, Alison (jacket design); Engel, Jerry (jacket photograph) (illustrator).

They are in excellent condition and exceptionally clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The cover edges are free of wear, no rubbing. Same goes for the cove…r corners. The page edges very clean. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. All the pages are exceptionally clean. I turned over every one of them without finding any instances of soiling. Twelve of the pages within the first two chapters do have lightly penciled underlining, none after that. I didn't find any creasing on any of the pages. There are no markings and no attachments of any kind. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. The jacket is very clean. There is some toning on the spine. There's also a small tear there above the letter 'e' in the author's name. And there is a thin tear off the middle edge of the front cover. You can also see the little scuff on the 'K' on the front cover, and there's mild vertical rubbing along the edges of the spine. The flaps are in very nice condition, very clean. The bottom corner of the front flap is neatly clipped. However the price is present off the top edge of the front flap.
