Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Frederic Remington (illustrator). I'm betting that most people list this book as a first edition, due to the only date in it being the copyright date of 1892. But an examination of the list of other books by Richard Harding Davis, printed right there on the copyright page, would reveal the truth. This can't be from 1892 because that list includes books published AFTER 1892 - the last one not published until 1901. So the only thing we can say with certainty is that this copy is from 1901 or later. The book consists of eight essays by this prolific and influential journalist, each describing a part of his journey around the west. (The 'car' in the title is a train car, not the family Buick!) The book is also profusely illustrated, including a frontispiece with tissue guard, by what looks to be two or three uncredited hands, one of which is Frederick Remington. This is a very good copy indeed, slightly faded on spine panel, and with minor browning to edges. There's a bookseller's label on front pastedown, but otherwise a clean tight copy.

Paperback. Condition: New. Remington, Frederic (illustrator). Before the start of the Spanish-American War, newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst sent star reporter Richard Harding Davis and acclaimed illustrator Frederic Remington to Cuba to cover the simmering rebellion. Remington grew restless at his post and assured his employer that nothing newsworthy was likely to occur; Hearst reputedly replied, "Please remain. You furnish the pictures and I'll furnish the war." This controversial 1897 book played an integral part in the United States' involvement in the conflict. Richard Harding Davis was among the most famous and widely read journalists of his era. His sensational reports, which combined a sense of adventure with a highly personal perspective, anticipated the more literary journalism of later decades. Davis's accounts of Spanish atrocities and misconduct helped pave the way for a war that led to the establishment of American colonies in the Caribbean and Pacific. Crackling with energy and drama, these historic and highly readable reports are complemented by 24 of Remington's atmospheric illustrations.
