Add to basketSecond edition. Large 8vo, xciii, 1195 pp. with facsimiles and photos in b/w. First published in 1651 this is the second edition, "with Notes and Introduction by Lino G. Canedo, O.F.M." and the first in the series Franciscan Historical Classics. Cordova Salinas was a native of Lima, from a distinguished family. His history comprehends all of the South American continent except Brazil, from Panama south. Because of the early and important role in South America of his order, which looked upon the native peoples in a benign manner, always eager to learn their languages and customs the better to evangelize them, and because of his completely free access to all the Franciscan archives of this huge province, Salina Cordova's history is of great importance. Virtually unobtainable for 300 years, this superb reprinting, with excellent notes and introduction, is particularly valuable. This is copy #94 of 100 numbered copies on special paper from a Limited Edition of 750 total. Beautifully bound in full Mexican tree calf with raised bands and red morocco spine labels with gilt rules and titles. Fine copy -- as new.
