"A Prose Translation with Foreword and Appendices". cover of book embossed with the "hannunvaakuna" ancient finnish good luck sign. ancient history. ancient religion. prehistory. mythology. folklore. history of finland. anthropology. musicology. poetry. world literature. ancient europe. ~ The national folk epic of Finland is here presented in an English translation that is both scholarly and eminently readable. To avoid the imprecision and metrical monotony of earlier verse translations, Magoun has used prose, printed line for line as in the original so that repetitions, parallelisms, and variations are readily apparent. The lyrical passages and poetic images, the wry humor, the tall~tale extravagance, and the homely realism of the Kalevala come through with extraordinary effectiveness. "This authoritative new translation of the Kalevala, together with the materials the volume contains relating the poetic style of the Finnish songs to the style of other orally composed poetry, is especially significant to students of European folklore. Both Professor Magoun and the Harvard University Press have placed many generations of folklorists in their debt." ~ Journal of American Folklore. "For English students of theKalevala, unless they have a good working knowledge of both Swedish and Finnish, this is an indispensable book." ~Folklore.

Soft cover. Condition: New. No Jacket. The devotion to the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ and particularly to His Holy Face is one of the oldest in the Christian tradition. This venerable devotion was practiced by such great saints as St. Augustine of Hippo, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Gertrude the Great, St. Mechtilde, St.…Edmund, St. Bonaventure and St. Therese of Lisieux. Beginning in 1844, Our Lord appeared to Sr. Mary of St. Peter and expressed His desire that whole world should know and practice this devotion in reparation for man s blasphemy. Through the efforts of Sr. Mary St. Peter, Ven. Leo DuPont and countless others, this devotion has become one of the most loved, and remains one of the most needed in our time. Eternal Father, we offer Thee the Adorable Face of Thy Well Beloved Son for the honour and glory of Thy Holy Name and for the salvation of all men. Prayer of Pope Blsd. Pius IX . Soft cover. Condition: New. No Jacket. Devotion to the Sacred Heart is a powerful little booklet filled with many of the treasures to be found in the veneration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Besides containing an explanation of the symbolism found within the Image of the Sacred Heart, it also includes explanations of the 9 First… Fridays devotion, known as The Great Promise, the miraculous cure of St. Gemma Galgani as well as many profound exhortations to offer reparation to the Sacred Heart. Authoritative and moving, Our Lord instituted this devotion Himself, saying: " I set neither limit nore measure to My gifts of grace for those who seek them in My heart." In our age of religious indifference, when fervor and charity have grown cold, Jesus exhibits to the world His Sacred Heart as the symbol of God s infinite love showing His Divine Heart as a furnace whose burning rays of love are able to reanimate faith and rekindle love in hearts grown cold and ungrateful. Number of Pages: 68. book.
