Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Lawrence (Frontispiece) (illustrator). 1st Edition. Bert Foster wrote a number of books for his Clint Webb boys' Adventure series. This is "The Frozen Ship, or, Clint Webb Among the Sealers". It, as is obvious, takes place in the frozen north, when sealer's brave inclement weather and ran the risk of their ships becoming ice-bound. It is an exciting, realistically rendered story, and thus not for hearts that are distraught about the sealing industry. The book was written long before public awareness turned its eyes to the plight of the seals. On the verso of the final page of text is a rather startling advertisement : an ad for a pool table (a 'Superb' Brunswick Baby Grand) The ad's text starts at the top by exclaiming : Boys! Own a Man's Billiard Table - Soon paid at 10¢ a day. At the bottom of the advertisement (which is fairly wordy) there is a coupon that was meant to be cut out, filled in and sent to the Brunswick-Balke-Collander Co. in Chicago for which in return you would receive the book, "Billiards - The Home Magnet" ! SERIES : Clint Webb Series TITLE : The Frozen Ship, or, Clint Webb Among the Sealers AUTHOR : Bert Foster IMPRINT : M. A. Donohue Co. PLACE : Chicago DATE : (1913) EDITION First Edition DETAILS : Trade Hardcover. Contains a half-tone plate frontispiece in monochrome; 255 pages plus 3 pages of publisher's promotional ads; approximately 5" x 7 3/8" (12mo); embossed pictorial green cloth; pictorial end-papers. the front cover depicts, in colors of dark green, brown and black, a seal on an ice floe in the foreground - beyond which in the background is a wooden sailing ship (which seems a little the worse-for-wear) - title in brown at top. The spine has a small vignette of a seal using the same colors. CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- Previously owned, a well-read copy, but clean and presentable with the following imperfections noted : BOARDS / SPINE - A production irregularity caused the black lines on the cover illustration to be slightly out of register, creating double lines - spine extremities are compressed and frayed - soft bumps to corner tips, with accompanying slight splitting of cloth- mild surface rub - else clean. TEXT-BLOCK EDGES - Toned and a bit smudged from use. There is a small dent to the front edge. BINDING - The paper over the hinges at the end-papers was split, but mended - The book has obviously seen use, and the text block is ever-so-slightly shaken and has a slight lean to the front - no leaves are detached. END PAPERS - The aforementioned mending to the hinges - the front fly-leaf has a tear to the bottom edge alongside the hinge (the end-papers must be considered fragile - friable) ; just discernible are pencil erasures to the front paste-down. It looks to me that there was a mend neatly effected to the paper over the hinge on the rear end-paper. INTERIOR - Paper, as explained above, is toned - there are likely scattered small signs of use - but basically the interior is clean and presentable throughout . DUST JACKET - Not present.
