very good dust-jacket, some label residue on front, attractive copy, very good black hardcover. FOSTER, R. F. Words alone: Yeats and his inheritances. Oxford: University Press, 2011, 1st printing number line starting with 1, xix, 236pp., . "W.B. Yeats is usually seen as a great innovator whose extraordinary imagination transformed modern Irish literature, making a decisive break with the past. But what made him the remarkable writer he was? In this book, drawn from the 2009 Clark Lectures, Yeats's prize-winning biographer R.F. Foster returns to the rich seed-bed of nineteenth-century Irish literature to reveal the influences that shaped the poet's unique and powerful voice: romantic history of the Young Ireland movement, the occult and supernatural novels of Sheridan LeFanu, William Carleton's 'peasant fictions', fairy-lore, and folktale collections. The young Yeats consciously mined these traditions and was, Foster shows, an inheritor as much as an inventor." - CONTENTS: National tales and national futures in Ireland and Scotland after 1800 -- The first Romantics : young Irelands between Catholic emancipation and the famine -- Lost in the big house : Anglo-Irishry and the uses of the supernatural -- Oisin comes home : Yeats as inheritor. ISBN 9780199592166.

20 pages including covers. Magazine-style staple-bound paperback: H 28cm x L 21.5cm. Pictorial front cover illustrated with green costumed leaping skater presumably depicting Gloria Nord; covers soiled and rubbed with some light toning; slender abrasion along spine fold; light vertical crease at center of publication; front cover has seven blue ink signatures at center left and, as none of the names match listed performers in the publication, all are likely a group of attendees. Three fake signatures of troupe management on front cover verso with past owner's blue ink eyeglass embellishments to two photos; two small vignettes on page 3 outlined in blue ink too but no other such marring found upon a quick perusal; some soiling and a few light stains to leaves as well. Staples have some rust but binding remains firm. Acquired from an Amory (Monroe County), Mississippi estate and probably purchased by the original owner at a November 16-21 [1948?] Memphis, Tennessee performance per the touring schedule on the booklet's last page adjacent to rear cover recto.
