About the book >.>.> Making a journey at Christmas now we can at least sit in a comfortable, well-heated train or aeroplane. Yes, life is more comfortable. The plumbing is better, armchairs softer and deeper, everything is more convenient. Touch a knob and the radio provides music for our Christ-mas-maybe a choir singing "O tidings of comfort and joy." Yes, we do have greater physical comfort, but the comfort and the joy of heart the carol sings of are rarely ours nowadays. Is it because we have moved on so far from the first Christmas that launched "comfort and joy" on the world? Have we, with our jet planes, our television and our atom-splitting left behind that world for ever? Superficially one can feel so. Yet examine the picture more closely and there is a surprising similarity between the first Christmas and today. Indeed, it's worth rethinking the Christmas story. For the more one goes into it, the more it bears on our life today. (LL).
