Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. First published in the UK by Heinemann in 1956, this is a second edition, first impression published by Arms and Armour Press in 1981. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, red lettering on spine faded to white, corners very slightly bruised, not price clipped (£8.95), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy. 502pp, illustrated. Based almost entirely on original German documents, including the captured files of the SS leadership, this book gives a final account of the Nazi Praetorian Guard. With steadily mounting tension, the story moves from the origins of the SS before 1923 to its supremacy, twenty years later, as the most appalling instrument of political and military terror known to history. The author sees the SS not as an historical accident, but as a tyrannical expression of bureaucracy in politics. It is with the administration and internal rivalries of the Nazi state that the book is mainly concerned: how the whole system worked out in peace, and above all in war. The author brought the objective eye of the historian to bear on this emotive subject and produced a book that is not only factual and absorbing but also a valid and vital contribution to the study of the Second World War. This is a classic work on the history of the SS. Gerald Roberts Reitlinger (1900-78), was an Anglo German art historian, especially of Asian ceramics, and a scholar of historical changes in taste in art and their reflection in art prices. After World War II he wrote three large books about Nazi Germany. He was also a painter and collector, mainly of pottery. Sir Martin John Gilbert (1936-2015), was a British historian and honorary Fellow of Merton College, Oxford. He was the author of 88 books, including works on Winston Churchill, the 20th century, and Jewish history including the Holocaust. He was a member of the Chilcot Inquiry into Britain's role in the Iraq War.

Some very minor edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, very small closed tear to top of spine, not price clipped (£20.00), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 264pp, illustrated. The extraordinary true story of a British soldier who marched willingly into Buna-Monowitz, the concentration camp known as Auschwitz III. In the summer of 1944, Denis Avey was being held in a POW labour camp, E715, near Auschwitz III. He had heard of the brutality meted out to the prisoners there and he was determined to witness what he could. He hatched a plan to swap places with a Jewish inmate and smuggled himself into his sector of the camp. He spent the night there on two occasions and experienced at first-hand the cruelty of a place where slave workers, had been sentenced to death through labour. Astonishingly, he survived to witness the aftermath of the Death March where thousands of prisoners were murdered by the Nazis as the Soviet Army advanced. After his own long trek right across central Europe he was repatriated to Britain. For decades he couldn't bring himself to revisit the past that haunted his dreams, but now Denis Avey feels able to tell the full story - a tale as gripping as it is moving - which offers us a unique insight into the mind of an ordinary man whose moral and physical courage are almost beyond belief.
