First published in London in 1775, the Anecdotes sur la Comtesse de Barry, mistress to Louis XV, enjoyed great success in Paris and Versailles, where the ban against them merely increased public demand. The present volume follows the English version published in London in 1777, which as an eighteenth-century translation preserves the style and feeling of the original. Edited with an introduction by Eveline Cruickshanks. Stylish nudes by Sir William Russell Flint.
