Hardcover. Quarto, [160], 759, [101] pages. In Very Good minus. Bound in full vellum, has gilt ornamentation to the boards and spine, and leather label on the spine with gilt lettering. Boards have light plus discoloration and age toning, light scratching, corners moderately bumped, and boards slightly warped. Evidence of ties having been removed from both boards. Binding with armorial stamp displaying the motto and coat of arms of the city of Haarlem. Textblock has the bookplate of Sir Robert Johnson Eden (17741844) placed over the remains of an older bookplate on the front pastedown, pencil annotations on the front pastedown, has extensive pencil annotation to verso of front-free end page, early ink annotation to the verso of the engraved titlepage, typographical titlepage also present. Textblock has pages lightly age toned with light plus foxing particularly noticeable on the edges, and edges of pages speckled red. Contains a folding plate with a portrait of Pieter Burman inserted before page 1, with a small closed tear to center left edge of page, barely impacting the printed area. Text in Latin. Gli Argonautica (Argonautiche) sono un poema epico in otto libri, opera del poeta epico di età flavia Gaio Valerio Flacco, ispirato all'omonimo poema di Apollonio Rodio già famoso presso i Romani nella versione di Publio Terenzio Varrone Atacino. L'opera di Valerio Flacco si inscrive perfettamente all'interno del clima culturale dell'età flavia, segnato dalla reazione classicistica alla letteratura epica di età neroniana, e dunque dall'abbandono del modello di Lucano e dalla ripresa delle tematiche mitiche di stampo virgiliano.

Caius Valerius Flaccus was a first century Roman poet who died approx. 90-95 AD. The Argonautica is his only surviving work, an epic poem of Jason and The Argonauts quest for the Golden Fleece.
