Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No dustjacket. First Edition. Grancel Fitz was a man among hunting men. He was the first person to harvest all of the North American big game species then recognized by the Boone & Crockett Club, and he completed most of his hunts in the 1930?s and 40?s when travel to the distant game lands could be an exciting adventure all to its self. He took most of his game through the iron sights of his favorite .30-06 Springfield rifle too! His interest in hunting and conservation lead him to the Boone & Crockett Club, where he helped develop the big game trophy measurement and recording system that we know today. He also was the first to introduce the term the Grand Slam of Rams, and the concept of The Grand Slam of North American Wild Sheep has been around since Grancel Fitz coined the phrase in 1949. He was a hell of a good story-teller too. His book ?North American Head Hunting? chronicles some of his most memorable hunts, and it remains a cornerstone book in the sporting library.

ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 1957). 1957 1st edition. 8vo (137 x 208mm). Ppxxvi,188. Colour frontispiece painting, b/w photograph plates. Green cloth, orange and green titles to spine. Hinges tender, book-plate ghost to front paste-down, good reading copy. Lacks dust-wrapper. "This collection of autobiographical adventure stories is based on the experiences of a hunter who, in the course of 38 trips from 1926 to 1955, became the first man in history to hunt all of the 24 different classes of North American big game animals that can be legally taken. Grancel Fitz has collected record-class heads of 13 different North American big game species - more than any other hunter. .His knowledge of a great diversity of game countries and hunting methods has given him an ability to compare the animals from the viewpoint of sports and an appreciation of the subtle differences in the personalities of our native species. Mr. Fitz believes that 'If we regard the big game species of our continent as a priceless heritage, to be held in trust for future generations, the practical need for wisely controlled hunting is obvious to anyone who looks into the problems of present-day conservation.'" Chapters include: Author's foreword; Of grizzlies and the river; Troubles with whitetails; Stone sheep beyond the Alcan; In a cave with a mountain lion; When buffalo Willie shot the bull; One elk for a lifetime; His Highness the white goat; Moose in three sizes; Desert sheep are different; Polar bear in a hurry. .
