The English translation is followed by the original Italian text on pages i - lv, entitled : Riforma della legislazione criminale toscana del di 30 novembre 1786'. The reforming penal code of Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo of Tuscany (1747-90), published on 30th November 1786, abolished the death penalty, the use of torture, the penalties of mutilation and confiscation, and revised judicial procedure, Tuscany was the first state to apply the enlightenment principles advocated by Beccaria. No executions had taken place in the Grand Duchy since 1769. The title is followed by the translator s preface, praising the reforms with some reservations, and explaining his motives for the English rendering. and by 4 pages of chapter index.
