Fine copy. - Commentary of Auguste Fiévet (1816-1870) on the (critical] report that Urbain Jean Joseph Le Verrier (1811-1877) wrote on the meteorological theory of Mathieu de la Drôme, published on April, 8th 1863 in Journal des Debats. Le Verrier was a French astronomer and mathematician. He specialized in celestial mechanics and is best known for predicting the existence and position of Neptune using only mathematics. The calculations were made to explain discrepancies with Uranus's orbit and the laws of Kepler and Newton. Le Verrier sent the coordinates to Johann Gottfried Galle in Berlin, asking him to verify. Galle found Neptune in the same night he received Le Verrier's letter, within 1° of the predicted position. The discovery of Neptune is widely regarded as a dramatic validation of celestial mechanics, and is one of the most remarkable moments of 19th-century science. Mathieu de la Drôme (1808-1865) made a name for himself by publishing a work devoted to the prediction of time by the lunar phases (De la prediction du temps, 1862). He made many predictions to newspapers and to the Academy of Sciences. A controversy ensued during which he opposed the director of the Paris Observatory, Urbain Le Verrier, against a background of political stakes (Le Verrier was one of Napoleon III's main supporters in the learned world).
